Howdy all!!! Were looking for a place to park our 38 foot 5th wheel for the summer near anchorage.dont really want to stay in town if dont have to. Was maybe wondering if there are some campgrounds that are maybe only known to the locals and not advertised. Any help would be appreciated!! Would even consider renting a piece of land to boondock on.. Would like to instal solar to help...
How are you defining "campground"? Do you want some kind of hookups, or is boondocking acceptable?
How frequently are you willing to move your rig? (Most public campgrounds have some kind of maximum stay limit).
Finally, can you clarify the last sentence? Are you looking for some work installing solar (a pretty narrow niche up here, by the way), or do you mean that you're rig has solar power, so you are somewhat self-sufficient.
There is a very nice boondocking site at the confluence of the Matanooska and the King Rivers. This is something like 30 miles East of Sutton along the Richardson Highway. Camping is on a gravel bar on the rivers edge so you wold NOT want to dump any waste water there.

US Govt survey shows three out of four people make up 75% of the total population
If you do not want to stay in Anchorage the closest private camp grounds that may give you an extended stay would be in the Palmer-Wasilla area. As far as renting a boondock spot, don't know, maybe place and ad on the Anchorage Craigs List and someone may respond that would have a spot you could rent. I have boondock property that I could rent you a spot but I am 178 road miles from Anchorage.

There are several nice privately-owned campgrounds in Palmer. About a 30 minute drive on the Glenn to the edge of Anchorage. The Glenn from Eagle River to Palmer/Wasilla is a 4-lane divided highway, just like the interstate system in the lower 48. From Eagle River to Anchorage it is 6-lanes. So the commute is easy, provided that you avoid rush hour. It sounds silly to say that Anchorage has a rush hour, but it definitely does, as the Glenn is the ONLY way out of town, there is NO OTHER road, side street, dirt path, NOTHING!
You might find somebody who will let you park on their property, but Anchorage has some pretty strict reg's regarding where and how long you can park RV's.

Saw somewhere that the ANC area schools were wanting RVers to camp at schools with hookups for atlesst five weeks or more. Not all of them are in ANC. Pretty sure it was free which beats boondocking.

"School Ground Camper Host Program."
To inquirer about becoming a Camper Host this summer or next contact:
Stan Syta, Director of Operations
1201 LABAR STREET
ANCHORAGE, AK 99515-3516
Phone: (907) 348-5122 Sorry, this is a old #.
*New contact: Vikki Koetje at 742-7800
at least a one-month commitment from May 18-Aug. 17
The program provides a great community service by meeting the needs of all parties involved," said Syta. "The Hosts get a free place to park with utilities and we get their watchful presence at school locations. Hosts can even pick a school for the view of the ocean or for its proximity to family and friends in the community."
The following is a list of the responsibilities of school ground Camper Hosts:
1. The Camper Host resides at the school facility assigned to them, for a period of time agreed to by the Camper Host and the School District. This could be for as little as a few weeks or an entire summer.
2. The Camper Host’s duty is to report any actions or presence of others that may result in vandalism to the property.
3. There will be one or two Camper Host parties at each facility. Where there are two, coordination between parties allows each the opportunity to make short trips to areas outside the Anchorage area for fishing, sightseeing, etc., without interrupting school site coverage.
4. School property is to be kept clean and free of liter. Pets are allowed with prior approval.
5. Camper Hosts do not have access to the schools or surrounding buildings.
The District provides water, power, weekly sewer service, and a cell phone to notify police or District security should the need arise.
"Having watchful Camper Hosts at our facilities deters many vandals," said Syta. "When vandalism does occur, our Camper Hosts report the problems quickly and we are able to respond to correct the situation."
