Just had seen the picture of this campground from the Bakerkids and looked this place up. This is definitely a place that we would like to try. Two questions:
In Reserveamerica it looks like only one small section is available for reservations. Is it hard to get lake side sites that are not reservable?
What is there to do in the area?
Thanks!

We arrived on a Thursday night and got a nice lake side site. There is a nice bike trail in the campground, fishing, boating, lodge w/restaurant. There are also Corp. campgrounds on the west side of the lake. Are you just passing through the area?

Not much to see in Bonnie and Ina I reckon... This is my home town area... My eighth grade school class had 14 kids in it... When they built the rend lake it ate up my home stomping grounds haha... Everyone is kin to everyone so I had to go as far away as Arkansas to find someone I wasnt kin to before I could get married.
If you are not into the Lake and all the fishing and stuff that goes with that about all you can is wait for the train to come through to listen for the train whistle at the Kirks cemetery railroad crossing... Or walk around the 12-15 foot high corn fields and watch the corn grow.

No, I'm just always looking for great places to camp in the future and this campground looked so nice! I was just wondering what there is to do in the area that could make it a vacation trip! It could even be something within a 30-60 minute drive from the campground.
Rend Lake isn't near anything. Look up "southern most Illinois" there are many thing to see and do. They are further south than Rend Lake so I wouldn't make that your base. Giant City SP would be more central to those activities. Garden of the Gods is nice. Cave in Rock is interesting. There is a winery trail with several wineries. Hiking and Bike trails. Cypress and Tupelo swamps. Birding. Springs. A Fort... We hope to explore more of the southern tip of IL this year.
also,
We met a family camping at Carlyle Lake and they took a day trip to St. Louis to see the sites.
Don't rule out watching the corn grow... I have been gone since going into the Air Force when I was 18 (Back in the 50's). Would almost give anything to be back living in that part of the country now. Home will always be home I guess...
I live 30 miles to the south-east of the lake, and although i do injoy watching the corn and alfalfa grow, there is not much to do that you can't do in your own home town.
lots of coal mines, hunting (duck, goose, pheasant, white tail deer, quail, squirrel, rabbit) shooting gar below the dam with a bow, and all the water sports things, horseback riding, but if you want to go somewhere and just relax by the fire it's pretty nice.

Hey, I grew up just south of Rend Lake and we had plenty to do! Nice campground if you can find a place to park with all the seasonal occupiers that inhabit the campground like they were owners. I try to use the one by the golf courses and gun range and those 27 holes of golf will give you all the recreation you want if you're a golfer. We enjoy staying there because it is within striking distance of all the relatives but far enough away from them that we can get a little downtime between visiting hours.
