Green Tow will you be beefing up your rear bumper. I'm curious as to what the weight will be when all is loaded. I'd like to do the same with my existing bumper, but concerned about the weight and don't want to spend the money for someone to weld a hitch on the back of the 5er. Right now I have a spare tire on the bumper, but could easily throw that in the bed of the truck.
We have the Onan LP generator and love it.... It is very quiet. The convenience is priceless - just push a button and it's on. We are occasional users of the generator, but travel 6 months per year, and the LP is the absolute best route to go. Don't worry about a separate gas tank. Stop at a rest area for lunch? Dry camp at WalMart?... Push the button, turn on the A/C, take a nap - Get about 8 hours on a 30 lb. bottle which is plenty for us..... priceless.......

sorry Greentow I re-read your thread and saw that you are using an existing receiver and not the bumper. Maybe I'll have someone take a look at mine and see what it would cost. I'd love to be able to use two receiver hitches so the tray would be more stable.
I went with the 5500 Onan built-in generator that runs on gasoline (factory order). DW loves it, she just pushs the button and she has power. If you have a smaller unit a lot of the time you can't run everything that you would like to run and you also have to go outside to set them up. Built in is just a lot easier.

I had a propane generator in my T/C and went through a tank a day running the generator and had a hard time finding refills on the road which made me carry a few spare tanks inside the truck which was dangerous but necessary. Then it came time to get a generator my first thought was getting a diesel because I have a 95 gallon aux diesel tank in my truck. I quickly changed my mind on the diesel due to noise concerns and went with gasoline because it is easy to obtain.
I haven't done this yet but I bought a Yamaha 4,500 KW remote electric start gen. I plan on keeping the gen in the truck bed to avoid any fumes getting into the camper. The camper power cord is long enough to reach the gen in the truck bed so the plan is plugging the camper cord into the gen the same way I would plug in the camper into shore power if I were at a camp site with hook ups.
since I have used this setup yet I was wondering if anyone can see flaws to my plan?
Obviously I won't ge able to connect the camper to the gen while moving but I don't think I will ever need to do that.
I once read that studies have shown that most accidents occurr within 10 miles of home, so I moved

I did the same but later on added a second 50 amp connection at the front of our 5th wheel. This allows me to use a short power cord and hookup is just a few seconds. If needed I could have it connected while on the road. I can still use the connection at the rear if we stop at a site with power.
Propane is just too hard to come by where I go camping. I reserve it for heating and try to avoid even doing that. Powering a generator with it, for me, would be madness.

I am thinking about a rear tray to set up my generator which is near the plug in-quick plug in running down the road. when you stop for lunch the 5ver is cool. Just a thought for you.

Whoops I quoted the wrong post
I like that idea a lot. I will be driving up to NY with the camper in a few weeks and have other things to get done, but before I head out west at the end of the summer I would like to try to fix hook up a wire in the front.
