Getting a puppy in about 8 weeks & after his parvo stage we will be taking him camping with us to explore new places together.

Any thing I should know?
Do most camp grounds allow dogs?
Do some not?

Besides the basic stuff like food water & toys do you bring anything special for camping with your dog?

This dog is a Chesapeake Bay retriever ( the same size as a Lab )

Very cute! We took our Aussie camping several trip as a young puppy. Spent a month camping when she was 10 months old. Best thing we had was her crate. A prong collar was a must as she had full speed ahead walking. Lots of chew toys, treats in your pocket to reward good behavior. Early socialization is key for developing a good camping dog. The easy walk harness is a great product. Be sure you have a tag on your puppy. I add a piece of duct tape with our site number .

Our dogs are 90% of the reason we have a camper in the first place.

We have folding crates that we break down for travel...and erect after the slide outs are extended.

We have a special basket by the door to keep our collection of doggie poo bags, and misc. doggie related stuff.

A flashlight handy for after dark pottie walks.

A hook next to the door to make it handy for the leashes to hang.

A vacuum cleaner to suck up all the white fur our Samoyeds leave everywhere.

Lint rollers to get the fur off our comforters...after they launch themselves into bed with us in the morning.

Dog bowls, tupperware container with food, misc. dog treats...

Shot records...

ID tags...on collar...

Oscillating floor fan for comfort...

Temp Alarm/Power Outage Alarm for hot climates if we're going to leave them in the camper for ANY length of time unattended. IE go out for a dinner, etc... (I can link you to the info on another post)

Counter top Ice maker...yeah, for us --- NOT, the dogs love an ice cube treat! We use the ones they don't eat to keep our drink cooler outside stocked with ice. (Just went on sale at Target stores, check their ad)

That's about it so far... We love camping almost as much as our dogs do. We take them on long trail walks every morning and evening. Some places have off leash dog parks...Like Disney's Ft. Wilderness Campgrounds "Waggin' Tails" dog park. They esp. love that!!

You just have to ask what the pet policies are. Most are pretty standard...

Clean UP after our dog
6' leash when outside the camper
Quiet hours observed

And there are others that have limits on how many dogs, prohibitions against certain dog breeds that are assumed to be agressive, prohibitions against chaining dog leads to park equipment, erecting runs, etc... Most have a statement to the effect that they can ask you to board your pet or be removed from the park if the pet is agressive towards anyone, or is barking too much, etc...

As a pet owner...we are viligiant at asking, knowing, following the rules. We do this so that we may continue to enjoy camping with our pets...and so that others may as well. I'm happy to say...most pet owner's do the same.

We have seen a few parks that totally prohibit pets. And most of the State Parks in Florida prohibit pets near the beach, spring fed rivers, public structures such as bath houses, etc... No biggee...just be on the lookout for these.

Enjoy your new puppy! You're in for a real treat!!

Might inspect them for ticks, fleas, etc...while camping. We live in an area prone for ticks.

Great dogs. People may say they are brown, but we all know they're deadgrass...

Good advice so far.

I have chipped my younger, wild pup. Start training your pup to the crate on the first day with you, and that way the crate is home. We have cable tie outs but they are never left alone outside. They are taught to be quiet, although both are Aussies and they tend to be more action than bark oriented. Most parks list on their web sites their rules about dogs. Enjoy seeing the world through the eyes of a puppy....it is exciting.

Actually there are 3 basic colors Brown, sedge & DeadGrass, Dead grass would be like a yellow lab, mine will be Brown.
