9000 miles and just as I was putting it away last week check engine light came on. I had just fueled a few miles prior and noticed after that the the idle was a little rough. Figured I might have gotten some water or crud in gas. Pulled the code today and it was P00171 which shows as "left bank lean mixture". Makes sense with bad fuel so I decided to change fuel filter. After tracing the fuel lines under the unit from engine to gas tank 10 times I've come to the conclusion that there is no fuel filter (unless it's in the fuel tank). Does anyone know if that's the case?? I though most E450s had fuel filter on frame rail under drivers seat---not there. Anyhow I changed air filter and dropped into fuel tank 2 cans of Sea Foam. Any other suggestions appreciated.

Inside the C-Channel of the driver side frame rail, under the cab area. Our 2002 chassis has an exhaust heat shield near the fuel filter. Yours, on a 2009-or-10 chassis, wonder if they moved it...
This Closed Thread talks about where it is, what tools, how to change it.

My 2011 E-450 only has a filter on the inlet to the tank that is suppose to have last a life time ever how long that is. I do not know which year they stopped putting in the in line filter.

Thx, guess 2010 must be the same. Hard to find any info online. Vehicle manufacturers never learn. In the tank fuel socks, in tank filters and combo fuel pump filters have always been a headache somewhere down the road.

It is probably the MAF (mass air flow) sensor dirty or might check air filter. The O2 sensor on number 1 bank (number 1 cylinder side) that brings in the code you stated. Would think if fuel filter was dirty it would be affecting more than left bank misture lean condition.

Thx, the air filter was surprisingly filthy for less than 10k, replaced it. I'll check the MAF sensor also.

So then I take it the only fitering is when fuel is being dispensed from nozzle into the vehicle...? That really doesn't seem acceptable.

No, as with all fuel filters, it is between the vehicle fuel tank and engine. It can be before or after the fuel pump, depending on application.

When our '02-'03 was new the check engine light came on because we didn't get the gas cap on quite right.
