We even carry our Midland in our vehicle when in areas with potential for severe storms.

You can also download weather Apps on your iPhone (and I'm sure other smart phones) that do the same thing.

Weather radio is GREAT if you're in an area with which you're familiar. If you're traveling in NOT SO WELL KNOWN territory using weather radio can be a lot more trouble. They almost always locate storms based on the counties involved and most travelers would not be familiar with county names or relative locations. I find that commercial television or even commercial radio do a better job of locating storms by cities and towns that make them easier to locate on a paper map.

The radio saved us few times last trip. If we hadn't had it on we would have got caught, on the road, in a very hard storm near Ft Worth.
A dust storm and snow storm in Arizona.
I would like to get one that automatically goes to the counties or area you are going through, if they make one.

We ALWAYS have our weather radio with us. Being from Oklahoma we know just how quickly storms can pop up & we like knowing about them asap. Somewhere I printed off a picture of each state with the counties depicted in that state. I keep that in a folder so that makes it easy to look up whether we are in line with the storms or not.

yeah, that would be most nifty. but this is where the smartphone apps shine. if you have cell service then the iMap Weather Radio app will do what you want. i have it on my iphone 4 but don't know if it or something similar is available for the androids. iMap Weather Radio uses your GPS location to provide weather warnings that you can customize. you can also set several static locations. it also has weather radar. $10 in iTunes.

i did find a Garmin handheld GPS that has a built-in NOAA alert radio. not sure if it will give you automatic warnings based on your current GPS location.

WeatherAlerts and ELERTS are also fed off the same IPAWS server that iMap subscribes to. I have all three and they all hit at the same time.

Hi rk911,
That is a great app, thanks for the info. I just downloaded it and got it all set up in under 5 minutes.
Thanks, Todd

We purchased an Oreon Scientific about a year ago and love it. No need to set the channels as it is totally automatic and knows where you are.

I like the idea of not having to set it. Which model do you have?

yup. Have an Oregon Scientific - place in bedroom on "standby" mode - only activates for an alert. As fulltimers, we wouldn't be without!!!
