Hello. DW and I are traveling from Nova Scotia to Montreal, then to the White Mountains National Forest / Mt Washington then up through ME and then home. We're going mid june. We're looking for campground recommendations. We want full hookups. We like large private sites. We've just switched from tent camping in Provincial parks to our first ever RV. Backing is a skill yet to be acquired. Thanks.

I would suggest checking out Glen Ellis in Glen NH, on Route 302 at Route 16. Not far from Mt Washington and other attractions. As for Freeport, I have stayed south of there at the Old Orchard Beach area and North in Boothbay. There is a KOA in Freeport, never stayed there but it is probably nice.

The largest most private sites for the White Mountains with full hookups will be found at Branch Brook Campground in Campton, NH. The campground buildings and some infrastructure are in poor shape but from where you'll be camped it will make no difference. The sites are back in but arranged in a sort of wagon wheel configuration, angled to the road that makes backing in quite easy. The Twin Mountain KOA is beautiful but it is the typical rackem stackem park.

While you are in Freeport, suggest Recompense Shore Campground (www.freeportcamping.com), which is about 5 miles from LL Bean (downtown Freeport) and located on Casco Bay. No sewer (dump station), but water and electricity on the wooded sites that are not located on the shoreline. The RV Park Reviews are old and don't make it sound appealing, but it is! It's an older campground, The sites are spacious. The bathhouse was immaculate when we were there in 2010. The dirt road in was a bit bumpy, but certainly not impassable. It's located on a farm and the belted cattle graze in the fields. Excellent place for walking and enjoying the beauty of Casco Bay. The staff went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. There is an amazing grocery store on the road between the campground and Freeport - The Bow Street Market - great carryout and a mix of staples and gourmet offerings. We loved it there!

About 5 minutes west of Freeport is Desert Dunes CG next to the Desert of Maine. May not have the large, private sites you seek but it is a quiet, very clean CG away from just about everything else.

If you're not familiar to Montreal, it is an island and there are no campgrounds on that island. Your best bet would be the South Shore across Champlain or Jacques Cartier bridges.
How do I know about Montreal? I lived there most of my life (55 years) and then I moved to Maine.
On your way to Maine, there are two roads of interest:

Route 302 offers several little towns and Mt Washington. If you do a search, you will find attractions on your way. Many campgrounds to choose from.

I-93 offers many attractions (the Basin, Lost River Gorge and Boulders, The Flume and many more). You will also have the chance to take Kancamagus byway which offers fantastic vistas from Lincoln to Conway and continue on route 302. Again, many campgrounds to choose from. We stayed at Lost River Valley campground a few times, and this summer we are staying at Fransted in Franconia (seems like a nice campground)

As GaryWT suggested, I would stay in Old Orchard Beach. Six miles of white sand and close to many attractions including Freeport which is 20 minutes away. One campground I would suggest is Hid n Pines Family campground. We go there every year and love it.

I'm sure you will enjoy your trip and if you have any questions, send me a PM

I've not been impressed by any of the three in Freeport that I've seen. Haven't seen Recompense Shore. Old Orchard Beach is even worse, IMHO, as they're huge and crowded. Too much noise for my taste. Stayed at Pinehurst RV in OOB -- huge site 60 acres with a few hundred sites, but only road in and out and it went right by our site. Constant traffic from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and later.

Personally, I'd stay at the Wild Duck CG in Scarborough (just north of OOB and probably an half hour from Freeport. It's a small (70 sites) CG for Adults Only. No one under 21 allowed. No swings, no slides, no bicycles, nice and quiet.

We camped at a nice little campground not from from Mt. Washington when we were in NH in 2009. It's located in Twin Mountain, NH. It's nothing real fancy, but it's got great views, nearly all sites are pull-throughs, FHU, cable, and free Wifi--for a very reasonable price. If your rig is under 35' it's $32/day.

I've included their website so you can check it out for yourself. Enjoy your trip.

As a Mainer, you should know that Old Orchard Beach is a tourist town and there will always be traffic and kids in the summer months!!!

Thanks everyone for your replies. We definitely value quiet and privacy. Because we are traveling in June we hope the campgrounds won't be too crowded
