Lake George is a good choice. Lots of campgrounds. Lake George RV park is great - a little pricey. http://www.lakegeorge.com/guide/lg_campingrvs.cfm

X2. Have been there several years ago. That's a nice place you should not miss.

I've no house in the city, just a camping tent in the wild.

As others have mentioned, Lake George, NY or Acadia National Park in Maine. My older sons and their families love to visit us when we are are either location. Another possible place that I would consider is Lake Placid, NY to visit WhiteFace MT and the olympic venues. My sons love the Moosehead Lakes region in Maine. Love to go on moose safaris.
Since it is August I am assuming you are heading north to cooler weather, but if not, try Virginia or Washington,D.C. area. We are leaving for Cherry Hill RV Campground in Maryland to visit D.C. Connection to metro from the campground. My son the history buff loves Gettysburg, PA.
What are your sons interested in doing? If they like kayaking, look into Bayleys in Maine near Old Orchard Beach.

See you on the road!

Thanks everyone for your replies, for the most part my son's like the beach scene so we booked Paradise Park Resort Campground at Old Orchard Beach, ME.

As your north like we are on Long Island, try Cherrystone in Cheriton VA. Youll love it and the kids will to. Maybe 9 hours but they are easy once you turn onton 13 south, its like a step back in time. Cherrystoneva.com. We are actually thinking of doing a 4 day weekend. 2 travel and 2 at the cg. Love the place.
