Was a wire loose? That can cause them to overheat. Age can also be a factor. Rig info would help. Somebody with the same rig might jump in.

If no loose wires or corrosion I would get an amp meter and see what's going on in that circuit.

You replaced the breaker and you say the new breaker still heats up? As already stated, make sure the connections are tight. The next thing to check is the air conditioner. It may be drawing too much current. A clamp on current meter can help there.

maybe the compressor is going out or the fan is sticking. remove the shroud and take a look around.

Most likely the compressor is about to go, it is the high draw item in this setup. Like said above, pull the shroud and use an amp probe to check the draw from the compressor. The compressor will be hot as well if it is the culprit.

Agree with checking the amp draw. I "assume" there were no obvious issues with the breaker compartment itself ie corrosion or signs of arching where the breaker connects to the breaker box. You could swap the wires going to the A/C units (front breaker feeding the rear unit and visa versa) to see if the "other" breaker gets hot also. If the "other" breaker gets hot it is a good indication of a compressor issue. Need to follow the standard electrical safety procedures (power OFF) especially when checking the inside of the breaker box.

Loose wire, Old breaker, Defective Breaker. LOW VOLTAGE operation of Air Conditioner and..
This is a biggie
Pop the top on the air conditioner (Remove the shroud and the covers inside it) and clean the coils, both Evaporator (inside/cold coils) and Condenser (Outside/hot coils) also anything else you think would benefit from a good cleaning.

sounds like the AC is drawing too much power
