My wife and I are planning a trip to Door County WI in June. My question is: can anyone mention any favorite camping grouds in that area? Yes I can do internet research and yes I own the Woodalls guide, but I wondered if anyone had had an amazing experience with a particular location that they would like to share. We are retired so money is an issue and we would like to be within biking distance of a town. We do have a WI state sticker on our truck which gets us into WI state parks. We are virgin campers and are carefully planning out our first forays with our new (to us) rig. BTW we have a Ford 250 and a Shadow Crusier truck camper. Thanks in advance for your help.

Peninsular State Park would be my pick. Wonderful golf course there, a great bike path, tour of the lighthouse, and about mid way on the peninsular so good location for sight seeing. We love that park.

There are 2 or 3 state parks in Door County with very nice campgrounds. One is close to Sturgeon Bay (Potawatomi SP) and the other is further up the peninsula (Peninsula SP). If you want to be close to relatively inexpensive shopping/restaurants, choose the one near Sturgeon Bay. There is McD's, Arby's, an Applebees, a decent Chinese restaurant, and Target, and a pretty good size grocery store in Sturgeon Bay. There are no cheap restaurants or stores in the rest of Door County. I would recommend to save money you stock up on groceries and supplies and take them with you.
You can check out the Wisconsin State Parks website for details on the parks.
Door County is lovely and very enjoyable. But it is not the cheapest---it's a tourist area and they have to make their money in the summer.

Egg Harbor Campground is one of the few that has full hookups. We always stay there. You could always search this Forum in the RV Parks section for Door County.
We bike all around DC and the trail around Peninsula Park is one of our favorites.

Another vote for Peninsula SP. The entrance is right at the edge of town. I didn't camp there but wished I had... I rented a Trek Pure bike just outside the gate and rode it (no entrance fee that way) all over the park. Great riding trails and a wonderful place to ride in. Like the bike so much I bought one for myself.
