I just purchased a 2004 Minnie Winnie with a 2003 E450 ford cab. It only has 12,000 miles on it. The odometer does work properly. The speedometer only goes up to 35mph and then stops.. I called a local Ford truck servic center and they want $499 just to look at it. Any idea or advise would be appreciated.

Try rebooting the computer. disconnect the negative lead on the battery and let it sit for about 10 minutes then reconnect. Start it back up again and let it relearn it's settings. No guarantees but sometimes it fixes that sort of thing.

After the computers are rebooted... do the sweep gauge thing by holding down the trip meter reset right after ignition is turned on.

I would guess that it is the speed sensor, It is on the top of the transmission and it might have to be lowered so you can get to it, Its on the back part of the tail shaft area.

Trying re-booting as stated previously, then drive around the local area and see if it "connects". Had to do that to mine once and within a few (30-50 miles) it re-connected and has worked fine since. I think it has something to do with the computer and possibly sitting without power for an extended time. Since you just purchased this vehicle who knows what it was exposed to prior.
Good luck!

Is the speed sensor on top of the pumpkin (rear diff) or transmission?

Thanks for advise, I will try to reset computer. I forgot to mention on its maiden voyage I drove it 1260 miles from Fl to NJ. I used the GPS for speedometer. The speedometer never went over 35mph. It sometimes went lower as I drove faster.

I have seen some issues with these speedometers in the late model Fords. Many times a self test on the cluster will clear them up for a while only to start have it sticking again. If it sticks or malfunctions otherwise, a replacement cluster will be in your future.

You might be able to hook up a ScanGauge2, it will read your MPH and any trouble codes. They cost about $170 though they are great fun to have.

Technology has moved forward just a bit since this was posted as in now you can purchase a bluetooth obd2 (On Board Diagnostics version 2) device that will send all the codes, in a nifty display on your cell phone or tablet. The bluetooth devices run in the range of about $20.00 and the pay for software ( you can get the free versions but they are limited) run about $20-30 for your device. So for less than $100 you can watch your on board computer while you drive on a graphic display. Just gives that "rider" in the right hand seat more stuff to watch and monitor... and also "suggest" you're using too much fuel now!
