In viewing postings about 2 to 3% are wider than my screen causing the bar to show below the posting to move it from side to side to
finish the reading or view a picture. Is there any way I can fix this so that won't happen on this site?

Not likely. They tend to be caused by members posting photos whose width far exceeds the Forum's recommended 640pix.

Some forum software also has the ability to compress the "displayed" url but maintains the integrity for the complete url behind-the-scenes.

Although "too-wide" pictures are the main culprits causing side scrolling, long URLs or a long line of characters, with no spaces can cause side scrolling. Some members will put in a long line of dashes (--------------). If it is longer than the screen is wide, the display engine has no way to wrap the line.
Most long URLs are not a problem, because the display engine can find a place to break, for example a dot '.'

I wish this forum would get up to speed with the other forum software available.
Most of them detect the resolution/size of the pic posted within a thread and automatically size the image to fit within the reader's browser. If the reader wishes to see the full size image, all they have to do is click and it will show as full resolution.
Moderators constantly editing user posts to 640x480 is both annoying (I want to see the full size) and archaic (really? we have to post at that microscopic size - the 90s called and they want their monitor back)... It's likely a time consuming/tedious task.

When you encounter one of those posts, try holding the CTRL key down and using the scroll wheel on your mouse. You can make the whole screen smaller, thus including all of the width of the post.
Scroll towards you to make everything smaller on the screen.

Set your resolution higher. 640x480 is so 20 years ago.
Use control - (command - on a mac) to zoom out.

The forum software will "compress" long URLs, if the poster uses the message window's Link tool,
