I found my front roof vent today is really brittle and is starting to crack. It's the original from Starcraft in 2007. I replaced my bathroom with a Fantastic Fan two years ago, and I love it. The problem with the front one is it is right over my bed, so as soon as the sun comes up, I'm awake. After two camping trips (in 07) I installed the reflective solar blocker, but it renders the vent useless. I am looking at the smoked color vents, but someone said they actually let in more light than the white opaque ones. Is this true??

Either way, I'm still going to have to replace it.

Thanks,
Chris

A lot of people cover their vents with these:

They protect the vent covers from sun damage and also make your vent operable in the rain.

Some people have painted the inside to keep light from filtering through.

No the smoked ones do not let in more light, and putting vent shrouds over them will darken the inside of your RV. And unless you have a fan in the vent the shrouds restrict air flow.

Just go out and buy the RV pillow vent covers. Mine are white on one side and reflective silver on the other side. They pop right in the vent opening they don't even need the velcro tapes that come with them. Mine are 6 years old and still sticking in the vent without tape!

Pop them in at night so you can get those extra few winks of sleep you want, and take them out when you get up.

BTW: Cover all your vents with these pillows when using the air conditioning will bring the temps down about 20 degrees!!!! A LOT of heat in winter and cold from the a/c in summer goes right out those not sealed plastic vents!
You can find them at any RV camping store. Do NOT buy the foam ones they are a magnet for dirt.

I built myself something very similar but, just used some black foam rubber and cut it to be bigger then the hole. Then I force it in there at night and remove it when I want to use the vent.

In my bedroom, Fleetwood installed a metal roof vent, and that blocks out 100% of the light when closed. I replaced it very soon after buying the RV with a Fantastic fan, and don't recall any light coming in - ever, even when open, I guess because of the Maxx Air covers on all the vents. More light is coming in the windows, except the back one, I cut a piece of Reflex insulation from a 48" wide roll and the width of the bed, have it placed between the back wall and the window shade, held in place by the mattress. No light and very little heat goes through that window!

Many RV parts stores do sell RV Vent covers in different colors. Simply contact the RV parts store and ask if they special order black. If wondering, I installed black RV cover above our rear bedroom roof vents (re: click here ) and it works great.

I ended up pulling the roof vent off and took it to a local shop. They sold me a smoke colored dome for about 15.00 to replace it. I am going to see how much it blocks on our trip this coming weekend. Thank you for all your help.

If that doesn't work, there will be a stainless steel vent that replaces it.

I am glad you got a smoke colored lid.

I wanted to put in a X2 for the "Maxx air II" vent cover, protects the new cover from sun and hail. Eazy install, no holes in the roof, keeps out rain in all but the hardest rain storms.
