If I were only going to be towing it for a few miles on 2 lane roads on nice windless days I'd probably not worry about it to much but if I were going to be towing a trailer that long with the Liberty several hundred miles on the Interstate I'd be a bit concerned. I'm afraid that after I had been passed by a few semi's going over 80 mph on the Interstate they'd have to surgically remove the drivers seat from my permanently clenched derriere!!

Not sure why no one has mentioned tires. We had a 2002 Liberty and that thing was as squirrely a vehicle as we have ever owned. The thing wondered all over the road do to the very soft ride from the tires and suspension.

We now have a 2010 Liberty and it is night and day different in comparison to the 02. Very stable do to the fact it does not sit as high and has a wider stance.

If I were to tow with an older Liberty I would first buy a set of wider rims and tires with the tires having a D-XL rating then maybe look at a suspension upgrade, maybe like this (click).

BTW Skip the Liberty has a 5000# trailer rating but you should know this, it's not the first Liberty post to come up.

Thanks Guys,
I've gotten the strong feeling that either a really small hybrid (18' or less) or a pop-up is the most I should try.

Turns out the trailer I was considering had some water damage to the roof - looked imaculate otherwise, but I think the repair would have required a whole new rood - not worth it.

Thanks to all for the feedback
B.

My wife has an 06 Liberty (turbo diesel), I've pulled some heavy trailers with it and it did well. Wheel base? Have you ever noticed a tractor trailer? The wheelbase on the tractor compared to the length of the trailer?

You can't compare a bumper pull (TV and TT) to that of a fifth wheel pull (tractor trailer)...

They are not all fifth wheels, have you ever seen a 33K lb+ modular home section flying down the highway at 75-80 mph, they are being bumper pulled usually by a old beat single screw, short wheel based tractors.

Up to a few years ago I was building modular spec homes, they were usually being delivered by old beater tractors, the trailer frames were in no better shape. They even just twisted the lights & brake wires together and wire nutted them up to connect the trailer to the tractor. Most of the tractors were maybe 15' long, the home sections 53' long plus the trailer reciever triangle.

Again, real world applications seem to fly in the face of all the expert opinions on this board, so take the advice here with a grain of salt

This modular section was over 15' wide, 53' long & well over 33K lbs & I bet that tractor barely weights 20K lbs.

I like how people that have never used a Liberty for towing shoot it down. I have towed from DC to 150 north of Quebec City and not had a single problem. I do not get pushed around when passed by trucks or buses. I have never got below 11.5 mpg and even got 15.2 mpg going from Hartford Ct to the end of the Jersey TP. For me it works very well.

what are you towing? must be small. i don't get much more mpg (15-20) without towing anything. liberty's are notorious for poor gas mileage for a 3.7

What does Jeep say about it? (I'm ASSUMING that it's a typo when you say the Jeep is rated for 500 lb. and you're wanting to tow 2800). I've never heard any manufacturer that rates their tow vehicles by the length of trailer they can tow.---
This is what Jeep says about it -- (online 2005 Liberty Owners Manual, page 286)

Gross Trailer Weight: 5,000 lbs. (max.)

Maximum Travel Trailer Length: 25 ft,

I am towing an HTT 19' long 4000#gvw. Usually with 2 18' kayaks on top of the jeep also. Maybe they help break up the air flow? I drive at 60 let it go up a little more on the down hills on the flats I use cruise control.
