Have a couple of Superdutys for sale in the area that we are thinking about going to check out. What are thoughts on the 2003 and 2004 model year superduty with the 6.0 diesel? After a quick google search, some reviews sound scary, BUT it's hard to tell what those people are doing with the trucks too. Our main use would be towing our 31' Keystone Premier bunkhouse (rated at like 7700 lbs or so). Any help is much appreciated!

As a followup to my question above...thoughts on a F250 (or really any 3/4 ton) gasser?? Maybe that would make more sense? Our 1500 GMC pulls it grand, but wow does it suck the gas, and the weight is a tiny concern as it's at the top of the scale for 'ok'.

Buy gas if you want no headaches and have no need for diesel power.

On average, the gas powered truck will be cheaper from 0 miles to 200,000miles to operate if you are towing modestly (8,000lbs).

The diesel will outperform only if it is properly maintained, operated from 200,000 to 500,000 miles and towing over 9,000 lbs frequently.

Fuel cost is higher for diesel at pump, gain a tad back from improved combustion efficiency, get killed in maintenance.

I had a 2500 with the 6.0 gas pulling a 26' Jayco. It did great but drank a bit, I'd bet anything will. It's just part of RVing.

I now have a 2004 Excursion with the 6.0 It was bought new by my dad, it had a few issues early on when he had it but is fantastic now. I know 4 others with 03--07 6.0 diesels and none of them have had a single issue. The trucks are driven a bit.
I'd just ask for the history on the trucks your looking at.

good luck

No such thing as to much horsepower. I would try to find a 03 7.3 first.

Standard vehicle checks from crash damage to clean title...

Requirements for buying 6.0 diesel:

1. Never modded, no tuner, no evidence of any mods whatsoever.

2. Low mileage

3. All maintenance with Ford / Motorcraft done and documented (receipts, showing actual filter, fluids, etc. used.

4. Never touched biodiesel

5. OASIS report clean, no major issues.

There are a few known issues and a few things that need to be done after the buy...

Pricing.

If it is clean as a whistle, price it at NADA wholesale less $5,000 to pay for problems.

If it has any issues, reduce price by $10,000 to $15,000 to pay for new engine.

Try to egg on the seller (or previous owner) to talk about the mods they did..

Report back on what you heard... and I will give you the dirt on what damage is likely to be found.

e.g. ARPs likely mean botched Head job (incorrect planing flat of heads).

As a former owner of a 04 6.0 and a 06 6.0 and present owner of a 08 6.4 the 04 was the worst truck I ever owned. I have bought 1000 dollar trucks that I got more trouble free miles out of. no they were not tuned or modified in any way atleast the first two and the 04 was trash. not just MO just facts. ask skipnchar he had one briefly.I would look elswhere they are very exspensive to work on so if money is not a problem it might be worth the gamble.

The 6.0L diesel is the worst lump ever put between the fenders of a hd truck. Ford has better offerings, and so do Dodge and GM.

Without getting into specific histories of your previous vehicles, it is not possible to have an intelligent discussion.

The problems are now well known, the fixes economically and easily done.

And the daffy fixes also known.
