We rode it last year, in the other direction. Coming back from Hope Idaho, we ran over an picked up 395 South of Spokane. Three long days later (Hope, ID to Burns, OR; Burns, OR to Carson City, NV; Carson City, NV to San Diego, CA)

We did this in late June, and hit some hot weather in the Reno/Carson City area...

We enjoyed the trip so much, that the next time we head North, we will go 395!!!

Have fun, be safe,

We used to use 395 several times a year when in-laws lived outside Elko NV and son was stationed in Mountain Home ID. Above Bishop CA it climbs pretty good for a while and during the winter may require chains. This time of year and as mild a winter as we have had wouldn't worry about it much. Great road from Ridgecrest north, 4 lanes with a huge median for quite awhile and much prettier than 5.

I avoid 5 as much as possible living here on the central coast.

Stop at the RV park in Likely, Ca..

Wife and I did the 395 from the southern start to mid-Oregon last summer and Likely was one of the highlights......Highly rec the stop, a few miles off 395 but well worth it....

It is nice to see that so many other folks like my favorite hiway! The 'back-side' of the Sierras is a most unique, beautiful environment ...

395 hits the I 15 in Victorville, but if you want to get more to the west you can take a short turn off that will take you to the I 15 to the west.

The section from the I 15 up to about where it is paralleling 5/99 (to the east, of course) is pretty slow driving as it winds through small desert communities, lot's of Harley packs on weekends, narrow, rough roads, and stop signs/lights galore.

I find it sometimes to try to catch it over by the Grapevine to avoid all that other crud.

From there north, though, it's a great trip.

You will enjoy the road but keep an eye out for late season snow, even as late as June. It usually does not last long and there are lots of crews available to keep things moving but do not be surprised if you need to delay a day or so until everything is cleared. Nothing to fear but be aware of the possibility.

You will take longer to get to the Or border but it is a much better ride. The I5 beats the suspension and is as pretty as a blank sheet of paper. The 395 has more ups and downs that won't help the MPG but there are better places to stop along the way.

One of my favorite roads also. The mountains are towering walls of rock. I drove a 18 wheeler through there several times as far as Reno. There were a lot of bicycles around Mono Lake. I think jake brakes make them nervous. LOL. I know it would make me nervous. Owens Lake at Lone Pine is interesting. I hauled many loads of 48" pipe from Texas to there for an irrigation system to keep the dust from blowing. Google Owens Lake for some interesting info on the area.
