Greetings all,

We are considering taking highway 395 north from Southern California (Escondido) to the Oregon border in early April. Anyone have any experience along this route as compared to going up I-5?

Thanks,

Peter

That section from Reno north is a nice 2-lane road. Weather conditions are fine right now but can change at this time of year. If not in a hurry, I would take this route also.

395 from about Olancha north to Susanville is one of the prettiest drives in the USA. Light traffic north of Kramer Junction until Carson City/Reno area and traffic there isn't bad at all compared to S. CA.

I worked the central valley near Coalinga and Red Bluff and the Lone Pine resident post on 395 with the CHP. Hands down take 395.

I've driven it from Death Valley to Susanville. No problems, however you will go from below sea level at Death Valley to 8142' at Conway Summit, just north of Lee Vining. In the Lee Vining area if you have time, stop at Mono Lake & Bodie Ghost Town. Both are worth a visit.

Agreed this is a beautiful drive. There was some pavement work on it just before getting to Kramer Junction last month, but it was complete a week later when we went that way again. We stayed an RV park in Bishop several years ago. Don't remember the name. Enjoy the ride.

I use 395 every year to go home at this time of year from Indio
You will find this route very scenic.Only heavy traffic is through the RENO area.Mamouth is quit a climb and you reach 8400Ft at one point.very nice easy route and no traffic other than the CS/Reno
DO NOT go to susanville.Crapy whindy steep drive out of there.Go right through to Alturas ca and then 139 over to Klamath Falls.

Peter L,
395 starts at around Adelanto, just above the Cajon pass in Victorville. It's two lane road in a desolate stretch of the eastern side of the state for quite a while from it's onset. But, as you approach the northern side of Ridgecrest, you start to see some nice country side, mountains, lakes (Owens and Mono)and other nice views. Once up in that part, like others have stated, it get incredibly beautiful.

I-5 sucks. All the way north. Down in the southern section of the state, the freeway has been in such disrepair for so long that it's really getting bad. I personally will never run I-5 again if heading North. I'll take 395 in a heart beat. There are lots of side roads around the upper end that you have your choice to run a round on while heading north.

We took it all the way up into Washington state heading for BC about five years ago and remember 395 quite favorably. A really great relaxing drive all the way. Here is a link for Route 395 weather.

If you decide to head on into the old Ghost Town of Bodie you might want to check road conditions on Route 270 since it's 10 miles paved but 3 miles at the end of dirt. It can become boggy if they had rain lately. You might want to check with the rangers, too (760) 647-6445 for current conditions.

Their winter hours till mid May are 9 am to 3 pm.

I am having to travel this highway this coming May 31st. I am attending a wedding in Alturas Ca., and I found a small RV park called Sullys right off 395 has anyone stayed there or even heard of it?

I am glad to know that 395 is a good stretch of road to travel

Did it a few years ago and got to Oregon first week of Oregon. Nice change of pace from boring I-5. Had 3 inches of snow in Lakeview but melted quickly.
