We did the stretch from Seligman to Kingman in 2009; this is a nice stretch of road.

Tucumcari is an interesting town in Eastern NM with a number of attractions from the Route 66 days including dinners and murals on the buildings.
Safe travels!

Two great museums in Kingman on Andy Devine Blvd. Lots to do with the history of the area and Route 66. Visit both places for the price of one. Make sure you eat at Mr. D's across the street. Great food and awesome homemade root-beer.

We were in Kingman and wanted to get to Oatman, a little ghost town off the beaten track. We headed west as per the GPS and it took us on the Oatman road {old Route 66} That souned logical and interesting so we continued , rather than going back to Route 40. An hour later and some hair raising turns and broken road with drop offs we made it to Oatman. A very cute artsy town with a staged “gunfight “ and burros that roam freely. We went west out of Oatman and picked up route 40 to get back to Kingman. Fortunately we were traveling in a car. I would not have wanted to try that section of Route 66 in an RV.
What amazed us was the thought of trucks and buses using that stretch before Route 40.

You must have been on Sitgreaves Pass, what a windy road! It's hard for me to believe that at one time that was a Major Highway also, It was an interesting drive to say the least. I enjoyed visiting Oatman also and feeding the burros that roam the streets.

You must remember, in its heyday, folks were not in such a damn hurry, cars were more fun, trucks were smaller, families almost always traveled together and stopping at many of the mom and pop shops was part of your travel agenda. Wish all the highways today were like 66 back then.

Interstates have been a blessing and the bane of our existence. Next time you travel down one, look at the service road that parallels it. Often times you will see what use to be the old highway, not necessarily Rte. 66. You may see the Ice Cream Cone on a shuddered building, an old flower shop, a drive-in, all closed down because the Interstate allowed travelers to pass them by. This happened to many small towns too so that they are little more than shells with near 100% vacant store fronts, fewer people but some real interesting cusses if you get a chance to speak with them.

Mootpoint, Unless I am badly mistaken, Route 66 will run parallel Route 70 to St. Louis and then along Rt.40. We have run along it as far as Springfield, Mo. Good Luck and Happy Camping.
