Anyone have a good story/experience of weird creepy happenings on the trail?

The only one I heard about was on a PATC work trip many years ago, that my Dad was told about. The cabin that was used as a base was full, so several folks slept outside in tents. One man woke up in the middle of the night with what felt like strong hands gripping his hair and shaking his head back and forth. This was accompanied by a deep, wordless muttering. Needless to say, he spent the rest of the night indoors.

That was many years ago, and I don't know the location.

I've no house in the city, just a camping tent in the wild.

I woke up and heard a racoon chewing on our trailer. It was so loud it sounded like it was next to me. I woke my sleepy husband up and turned on the light.

It was our cat eating dry cat food.

That was scarier than when a bear came into our campground at Yellowstone or a bufffalo and wild horses a few feet from our tent in Theodore Roosevelt NP.

I was in Yellowstone in 1958 when the earthquake struck, causing the landslide that created Quake Lake. We felt some of the fore shocks the night before but got up and left before the quake actually happened. Didn't hear anything about it until we were nearly home and stopped to eat at a restaurant in Nebraska and heard of it on a TV in the restaurant. showed traffic lined up for miles on the road we'd taken early that morning without another car around. We were towing an 18 foot trailer with a 1955 Buick Sedan with a standard three speed tranny.

Other than that one bit of excitement I've never experienced anything other than wildlife in the campsite (we often camp in disbursed camping areas). We've had bears, deer and who knows what else outside the trailer on numerous times but usually don't go out to see what is there unless it's making a big fuss over something.

2am and the kids were asleep.. I was in the front of the TT with the DW.. We hear a noise that sounds like the door so we stop and listen.. I get out of bed (not wearing a thing..) look out window, move to the door.. nothing there.. I open it and look out.. Nothing there.. I close the door and lock it.. turn to my wife and shrug as to say it must have been our imagination.. Just then the door handle starts making noise, I think to myself "Oh fu.. here we go..", stomach turns in a not at this exact moment, heart begins to race or did it stop?. I open the door expecting to indroduce my foot to someones face without hesitation and then..STOP! I recognize that person?! It's my step son! There I stand bare a** naked things all lined up and not pretty I'm sure. I stare at him, he looks at me, both with a look of confusion and shock on on our faces.

I think he was speep walking as he claimed to be going to the bathroom although we had a bathroom in the trailer. He never did that again! Looking back.. maybe that is why he stopped camping with us?!? Maybe that is his scary story and not mine.

Loud crash and lots of yelling one night at Beverly Beach SP - Oregon Coast....
Late arriving campers ( their very first trip) backed their rig over our power hook up post and missed our bedroom slide by inches.

bump in night.....

On 2 separate occasions, I've camped with friends. In both cases, we were in separate tents - 2 of them in their tent and 2 in mine. Both times, they woke up in the middle of the night and swore they heard bears outside. Both times, it was either my or my dad and me SNORING.

I got a sleep machine a few years ago - I love that dang thing.

Boondocking once in the hills, no one around for miles. Reading a book minding my own business........loud smack into the side of the trailer. DW didn't want me to go look, but went out anyhow. Found a bat lying on the ground after crashing into the side of the TT. Thought it was dead, but after a few minutes started to move, roghted itself and flew off.

Nothing weird, but a long time ago we were camping at Mt Rainier in a PU. That predated the big garbage containers they use today and during the night we were woke up by a tremendous racket. There was more than one bear outside and it sounded like they were playing basketball with the garbage can, punctuated by the PU moving as they bumped the end bed. My oldest son made an Olympic grade long jump from one end of the PU to the other because it was his bed. It wasn’t really scary, but no one was going to sleep with all that racket.

Another time in Capital Reef in the same PU we heard strange noises we couldn’t indentify. I slipped outside and found a whole herd of skunks were playing under the trailer. Needless to say, we were careful not to make any loud noises or spook them in any way.

I had a couple of experiences with lion, too, both on hunting trips. Once we threw our sleeping bags down around the campfire and the next morning found lion tracks all around them. He had obviously walked between the bags sniffing us during the night. That was a little eerie. And on another trip I had one follow along beside me in the brush for a few hundred yards and periodically scream. I can’t say I was particularly scared, but I thought that was unusual behavior and every sense was working at max for sure.

I’m actually a bit more wary of lion than bear, they’re a lot stealthier and there are a lot of them in AZ, even though seeing one is a rare event. On the other hand, I don’t think in my entire life I’ve ever had an experience described of someone pulling on my hair during the night and waking me up or anything even remotely similar.

Years ago, while in our family tent at a forest service campground, a momma black bear and her cub came into camp for a visit. We had two small kids with us . One and two years old. There was a food locker that I had wired shut for the night and that locker was held up by 2 - 4x6 posts. As I lay there with a flash light in one hand and an axe in the other, I watched momma bear stand on her hind legs and start pushing on the food locker - as her baby tore up my small ice chest that was keeping my beer nice and cold. She kept pushin on that locker until it came crashing down. But the door s didn't open. I started yelling at her and I will never forget the look she gave me. It looked like she was thinking about whether or not to come visit the tent. And I started thinking about where my one swing of the axe should go.. They finally left and we left the next morning as well.
