We ventured out into the valley early in the morning and barely made it back to our car later on. Two bottles each was not enough. Oh, and Zabrisky Point is a wonder.
How is the drive up to Zabrisky Point? White knuckle? Narrow roads with no shoulders and sheer drop offs?

I agree! You can fill-up with water there as well as dump. Free hot showers too! As to not repeat everything, we wrote extensively about the park in our blog (link below n signature block). Have fun!
For a great CG near a lake, check out Lakeview CG at Cave Lake SP near Ely. Lake views from many sites and walking distance to the lake where you can fish. Plenty of hiking in the area and you can explore the Schell Creek Range by heading north toward and over Success Summit. Cave Lake is at 7300' so is cooler than being in the valleys. Do arrive before Thursday evening as the place is popular with locals from Ely. We camped there last June during the middle of the week and I think there were six campsites filled.
Reno, and the road to Reno, has a lot to offer. Hawthorne, Fallon, and Fernley all have interesting and nice places to stay/hike/explore. And the Reno area has a totally different climate, not to mention Lake Tahoe, Carson City.
