For a great CG near a lake, check out Lakeview CG at Cave Lake SP near Ely. Lake views from many sites and walking distance to the lake where you can fish. Plenty of hiking in the area and you can explore the Schell Creek Range by heading north toward and over Success Summit. Cave Lake is at 7300' so is cooler than being in the valleys. Do arrive before Thursday evening as the place is popular with locals from Ely. We camped there last June during the middle of the week and I think there were six campsites filled.
Reno, and the road to Reno, has a lot to offer. Hawthorne, Fallon, and Fernley all have interesting and nice places to stay/hike/explore. And the Reno area has a totally different climate, not to mention Lake Tahoe, Carson City.

Looking down upon parking area for Zabrisky Point,Hwy191 is right next to it and it's a easy walk to the top.
