Is there a trailer friendly place that's either close enough to walk to the sites, or has a shuttle?

http://www.williamsburgkoa.com/ These folks say the have a shuttle in season. Have never stayed there.
http://www.anvilcampground.com/ This park has a shuttle. We stayed there once and would never again. The park is within feet of a major/busy rail line. The trains thunder by at all hours of the day and night. I have never undersdtood how they get such high ratings with the guide books.
http://www.americanheritagervpark.com/ This is by far the nicest campground in the area, but I do not believe they have any shuttle service.

We stayed at American Heritage last July. Short drive to attractions and outlets, but no shuttle. Would definitely stay there again! We camped in a 5th wheel.

Stayed at the Williamsburg KOA once and that was enough. It would be OK for a pop-up or tents but too many trees and narrow poorly marked roads for us.

Time to camp.

None of them are close enough to walk, at least for me..........I have stayed at all of them, and I will only stay at American Heritage from now on. Best campground there, hands down.

WOW thanks for all the great info. The reason I asked was because we were there many years ago, and stayed at a motel that was a walk to the colonial area.
Now let's talk price. Anyone stay at a Passport or other discounted place that we can drive from?

There is no campground in Williamsburg that you can walk to any of the sites. If you want to listen to trains run past your trailer day and night, stay at Anvil. We have not stayed at the KOA but we looked at it and were not impressed. The best campground in the area is American Heritage. The drive is very quick, getting back on the Interstate, to the historic area, the Colonial Williamsburg Visitors Center (which is home base and parking for Colonial Williamsburg) and to Busch Gardens, Jamestown, and Yorktown. Since you are bringing a trailer you will have a vehicle and you really need one in this area. Take a look at my site linked below in the archives for September and October 2011 for detailed articles about Williamsburg and American Heritage Campground.

I'm taking my chances with the Anvil come July. It will be my first trip to Wburg with the RV. Being on the trolley(bus) line was a major factor in my decision. I don't think the trains will be an issue, but I'll be sure to update everyone with my personal opinion after I get back.

Anvil claims to be an actual stop on the public transit line as opposed to a van shuttle that drops you off at the Visitor's Center and you are on your own from there that the KOA offers.

To be clear, once you get to the visitor's center and purchase your ticket, multiple shuttle busses run from the visitor's center to several stops around the historic area. They're included in the ticket price and you just hop on and ride to the stop of your choice, as many times as you wish.

Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.
