This is my first big truck and diesel engine and I treat this truck differently than any other vehicle I've ever had. Every other I considered them as a 7 to 10 year ownership. This one I treat as 20+ and I've put more mods into it than all others combined. Partly it's the high cost of the new trucks. Spending money to improve it or fix it seems much easier when new cost 50-60k. Plus I don't want to get rid of my 2005 5.9 engine.

A truck 502 is about $4000 NEW from Scoggin-Dickey! No idea where you got $10K.

Note, gotta be Vortec, not carbed

Well, I see two possible ways to do this. One, put the EFI stuff on the 335HP 502 Hi-Torque long-block. Get an EFI intake (if yours won't fit), have a chip burned for the ECM, and roll another 250,000 miles. I remembered wrong, it's actually $6000. ($4K is the service replacement 454.)

Two, get the $4650 502 short-block, and just top it with your current heads (or rebuilt stock 454 Vortec heads) and top end.

Note: it is really, really easy to spend money on Scoggin-Dickey's site!

Still loving my old 97 Dodge. Pulls the fifth wheel great. Course, the fifth wheel is a 95, so the two are pretty well matched.

Yes. 2002 GMC Duramax / Allison bought new.
I was buying a new pickup every five years since my first new car a 1972 Suburban with the 402 big block.
Duramax stock only 520 foot pounds of torque and I already tow my TT and my boat too fast.
I have owned 3 Porsches and own a Mercedes sedan.
I would never consider this "TUNER" mentality in a pickup for towing use.
The other factors such as towed load uphill and cornering with a trailer dictate that 520" is just fine.
Right after I got it I put a fancy stereo and amp and speakers in it, a fiberglass SnugTop canopy, running boards, brake controller, fancy smancy Weld Polished Aluminum wheels, and LT 265 load range E Michelins on it. Also a nifty graphic on the side of this Pewter colored Hangar Queen.
When I sell it everybody wants those features for free.
They're gonna have to wait. I expect another trouble free 5 years from the Duramax Allison combo. Besides, GM shuts off the fuel right around 100 mph .
Porsche does 180 , Mercedes does 135 electronically limited and they're made for the autobahn. The HD 2500 is not so aerodynamic. It still cruises nice at 80 in the high desert not towing.

That is how got to that $10K number !

Been a long time since I've built an engine and there way too many
new options that both mix'n match to don't mix'n match...meaning that
trail-error is $$$$$ that I don't have, nor willing to spend nowadays

Sanity always comes back if I let it sit long enough...and either a
truck HO 454 or rebuild my current 454. Can't beat crate prices, but
am shooting for as much bang for my buck...talked to a few crate eng
suppliers and some won't, others willing to stuff whatever I want for $$$

OBTW...my 1996 Suburban is now considered an OLD keeper...

Why not just throw a stroker crank in a truck 454 and build your own 502?

97 ranger 4.0l 5 speed auto, 4x4. Like the truck, but no longer trust it. Left me stranded 4 times last year. I need it to start when I pull my boat out of the water. After every repair I wish I would have dumped it. I like it when it runs though and its awesome to have a truck that you don't care if it gets dented.

I do love my King Ranch.

Having OCD, i keep my truck pretty clean...I do get questioned from time to time on the year of my truck, always brings a smile to my face when i tell them and see their reaction.

I am 200 miles from 100K.
