Is there anyway to improve satellite reception on a dish (not dome) during heavy clouds and rain?

Yes, move the dish out from under the heavy clouds.

I've heard that waxing the surface of the dish to improve the water runoff will help. I plan to try it this summer. Has anyone else tried this?

If you are losing signal due to clouds, something is wrong. A dish should be good in all but the heaviest rain storms.

Losing signal on a wimpy dome is normal. And yes even heavy due can cause an issue. The domes are very small compared to a normal dish. Rain X or anything that lets the water slide off easier will work. I can get rain fade on my slmiline 5 that is probably the largest dish that Direct tv uses.

I really laughed at the one that said to move out from under the clouds.

We were in Yellowstone a couple of years ago and when I got up early in the morning the satellite was not working. I didn't open the windows and just grumbled that something was wrong again. When the wife got up she asked me if I had looked outside. There was two inches of snow on the ground. The dome was snuggled under it. When the sun came out and the snow melted the signal came back.
