Priced out a tandem tow dolly with a few options and it's pushing $7000 plus tax and shipping. Looks like a glorified low boy with some modifications. Any body have one built? Save any money? I had a custom 5X10 made last year with electric brakes and aluminum wheels and it was $1400. I can't see how this would be more than $3-4 grand. Thoughts?

houtrz,
Well Sir, I'm in the middle of a restoration of a small, 5' x 8' trailer. I bought it as a flat bed with just a 12" high, front rail on it. I've tore down all the way, cut off the junk front rail and have proceeded to put 14" high sides made from 2"x2"x1/8" angle iron. Then I installed 1/2", flat, 13 GA. expanded metal all the way around. I built a gate, the same height as the sides. I'm installing brand new LED stop/turn/tail lights as well as LED red and amber side marker lights.

I've picked up some brand new 12" wheels and tires from Walmart. What this is all leading to is, I'm already into it far and above where I thought I'd be at this point. I still need two sheets of 3/4" ACX plywood, and some sealer for it as well as some sort of top coating. And then, I asked my local supplier for some medium quality automotive paint that, if I were to go with it, would be very close to $300.00. I think I'll do some "Rustoleum" "Hammer tone" paint from a local True Value hardware for a total of about $75.00 for paint, thinner, primer, sand paper etc.

I wanted some nice aluminum wheels for it but, shipped to my house, they would be right at $250.00 for two 12" wheels and two tires. I paid $150.00 for the ones from Walmart. If I went with all I wanted to on the onset of this project, I'd have very close to $1000.00, wrapped up in a tiny, 5'x8' trailer.

So, just in materials, one can get way up there in price. So your tandem dolly estimate of $7K, while it's absurd to you and me, I can sure see how things creep up in price now days. I have built several trailers in my life and each and every time, I ALWAYS UNDER estimate of time and materials. I'd have to see the one you're talking about to get a better handle on what they're wanting to charge.

With today's workman's comp costs, health insurance, overhead, materials, and even a meager profit, I surely can see the cost of something like that climbing.

One of the options was to add electric brakes for $495. Thats in addition to the price of the standard axle you already paid for. Just wondering if having one built at a local fab/trailer shop would be any cheaper or give you a trailer that is built to your needs, like kayak rack, cooler storage and so on.

You could probably pick up a used dolly, and have it modified by a local shop.

Lot of work to unhook if you get in a tight spot.

My son had one a few years ago. The only drawback was ground clerance in the rear he sold it when he got a pick up toad and now puts the golf cart in the back of it.

Are they out of business? That website no longer comes up.
