I've never really driven north of D.C. except once to Brunswick NJ and that was 30 years ago in a Toyota Corona wood panel station wagon.
May need to work in Newport for a week and figured it would be a good opportunity to visit New England with a week or two of vacation after. Unfortunately, getting there I will be pressed for time, so look for the best way (quickest with least amount of stop/go traffic) to go north. Will have the truck camper so while it keeps the tolls down with only two axles, realize the camper may restrict me from certain roads.
Would be leaving Charleston late Friday afternoon and arrive Newport Sunday night as I have to be at work at 8am Monday.
MSS&T just shoots me up I95 the entire trip. Is there a better way to go?

Since you're going to Newport, Rhode Island, in a truck camper on a weekend, I'd just stay on 95. If an of these things change I'd go 95 to 17 to 81 to 78. Or 26 to 77 to 81 to 78.
I-95 is the fastest way. You may or may not have an issue with the tunnel in Baltimore, but you can route yourself to go over the Key Bridge instead.
I was down in Goose Creek a few weeks ago, and drove up to Cape Cod the other day, so know that you've got a pretty good drive ahead of you. When you get up into RI, it will be quicker to cut across the state (Rt. 138 / Exit 3A), and take the Jamestown/Newport Bridges into Newport (rather than drive up and around Providence).
Probably easiest to sleep in one of the rest areas on the NJ Turnpyke, which will be about 12-14 hours away from SC, since they have plenty of parking, and don't seem to bother people who pull in and sleep. Then, you'll be rested for the rest of the trip up through NYC....which can be pretty hectic. Try to avoid going into NYC around Rush Hours (6:00 - 9:00AM)....though it will be busy 24/7.
Have a great Trip

We went to Newport last year for grandsons graduation from Officers Candidate School at the base. We wanted to go in our motorhome and spend a long leisurely trip there and back but the thought of getting thru NYC with the mh and towing a car scared me to death. We flew into Providenc, rented a car and had a very nice visit. I want to go back.
If your looking for a campground, Paradise Park in Middletown, RI on Route 138A is only a five minute drive to downtown Newport. They have a website...
