Maybe when it's running on electricity but I run mine on gas when we're boondocking. I seriously doubt that it uses more electric power than a residential fridge, energy star or not. I don't know of any residential fridges that run on gas, altho ISTR there were such units back in the old days. Good luck running your residential unit on batteries. Let us know how it goes.

if you have a 12xx Norcold or Dometic RV fridge, you will use MORE electricity than a new Es residential, even if you are on the LP side. The icemaker is old technology, the fridge uses electric to operate the 2 control boards, the burner controls, the defrost mode and the door flap heater. All of this power combined, DC and AC is more than a new Es residential model. When an RV fridge is on straight electric, it is a huge power hog....There are hundreds if not thousands using new Es technology residential fridges while boondocking without any problems. My current solar will allow at least 3 days without any generator use to assist and when I add one more panel or 2 additional batteries, my assit requirements will be nil.

Sorry your having problems with your fridge. Looks like you've been given some good direction here. We recently replaced our cooling unit with a brand New Amish cooling unit after an ammonia leak and near fire.
We have been very happy with our new Amish cooling unit. Since our fridge was from 2000, we purchased the cooling unit package with New fans, fan switch, and AC elements. Oh and we also bought the 'add-on Condenser Baffle' which I think was a cheep & simple device but could help cooling greatly especially with the RV manufacturer didn't baffle the cabinet correctly or is in a slide.

Hello it's less labor to replace the refrigerater .my refrigerater when last year and I thought about replacing the cooling unit also.PPL.com out of Texas was the best place to get it from shipped right to your door.Instation was easy less then a hour all done and I'm no mechanic two 12 volt wires gas connection about 6. Screws inside. The hardest part is you need two people to lift it in to place.
I went to PPL and found my fridge (original) for $3100.00... Amish unit $1300.00
If It weren't for flash backs I would have no Memory at all If you don't stand behind our TROOPS feel free to stand in front of them during a fire fight

I don't think the residential unit would be the way to go for you. I have run the numbers in the past and even with my 4-6v batteries it wouldn't work for me. You would probably need a minimum of 6-6v batteries and it doesn't appear you would have the space. BTW I had my Dometic replaced this summer with the same and it cost about $1,300 total.
