We are planning a trip across the states but have no planned itinerary. Can we just arrive at a campground and usually get a spot to park for the night.

Many no reservations posts.
Not every post is a general discussion, but many are.

We almost never make reservations. Only been a problem once or twice in 8 years. We have taken some fairly long trips up to 5k without reservations. All though when we get a hour or two out we start making calls.

That is the best way to go. Pick a spot mid-day in your trip and call to see if you need a reservation. Only two exceptions would be holiday weekends when you might want to stay put or make reservations in advance, and perhaps checking in busy tourist seasons in some areas - e.g. New England coastal areas in mid summer.

If we are traveling more than a couple days away we never make reservations. We have always found a spot. If the place we show up to is full they usually suggest someplace close that has an opening. If we have to dry camp a couple days in a row we may head for a specific destination the next day that has hook-ups, otherwise we just look at the map in the morning and head out in a direction and see what happens.

We never make reservations. That allows us to say "HEY, let's stop here for the night!" anytime it looks interesting. Or, if we are running ahead of "schedule", we can go on down the road instead of stopping because we are locked into a reserved site.
We like the freedom that gives us.

Depends on where you are, what the season is. Major national holidays can be a problem, as can major national parks that draw lots of visitors. Local events of sufficient popularity can also cause problems, but then you just travel to the next town. Naturally, tourist-oriented destinations like Santa Fe and the like can often be a problem outside of low season(s).

we only worry about weekends and holidays. Otherwise we travel on a weekday (not Fridays), stop early and never have a problem.

Years of extended travel, two and a half years of full timing... what's a reservation? A service for people who have timing or other issues. I've made reservations 3 or 4 times over the years to meet and camp with friends with those constraints.
During the traditional camping season, my travel days are Monday through Wednesday, seldom exceeding more than 200 miles. I carry a laptop with an air-card. It's a good idea to call ahead. The shoulder season appears best for the most popular attractions. It takes a little more research and planning in S. Florida and Texas during the 'snowbird season'.
I'm a "walk-up" everywhere. Prefer National/State/County&City campgrounds with a mix of Passport America parks if necessary. Not opposed to staying in a commercial park if the circumstances are right. On rare occasion I have dry-camped for a day waiting for a site to become available in a certain park. Oh! and I'm still employed, for another year and 3 1/2 months (who's counting?)... LOL. Good luck and enjoy your journey.

It really depends on lots of factors which you will learn with experience. We prefer no reservations and it works fine USUALLY. Certain times and places we wouldn't even think about going without reservations. For example, south coastal Fl. in mid-winter, The major western national parks in peak season, etc. Don't wait till early evening to stop and look for a site. Some campgrounds literally never fill and others fill about every day in peak season.
