Been burned a couple of times that we made reservations -- parkwas a dump. Now we seldom make resevations. About the only time we do is for a holiday or long weekends. We normally plan about how long we want to drive and check for parks along the route andmake a couple of calls to check availability.
Also, sometimes camping quide ratings for campgrounds are higher then what we would rate the campground.

Having traveled full-time for the past 16 years, we rarely make reservations. We don't drive long days and instead, pull in early afternoon. For weekends we stop on a Wed. or Thurs., never pulling in on a Friday. For 3-day holidays we stay away from popular tourist spots and any kind of 'water' sites - rivers/lakes. We just find a quiet spot. Even most national parks such as Yellowstone and Grand Tetons don't allow reservations for all their sites. They keep some sites and even some whole campgrounds open for no reservations. With our 40' motorhome we still have no problem finding sites. Of course, if you really are on a tight schedule or need to be somewhere on a specific date, we would recommend reservations. Have a good trip!

In over 200,000 miles we've made reservations more than a few hours ahead about three times. We have ONCE had to go to the next CG down the road. We do sometimes call an hour or two ahead, especially if we will be arriving late.

if you plan of visiting California, then you should plan on making reservations, even off-season.
it would help if you narrowed it down to where and when.

I agree for the most part, but it depends where you stay. If you stay at private campgrounds, you can usually get by without making reservations. If you want to stay on the beach in California, all bets are off as they are usually booked months in advance in the peak season.

For the past five years I have worked for Allegheny Site Management which operates all the campgrounds in the Allegheny NF. The only time I would say someone needs to have a reservation is on a holiday weekend. Thats not to say you can't get a walk-up site on those weekends but the walk-up sites tend to fill up early the week before a holiday.

Been on the road for 4 years now and have 'never' made a reservation!
Almost all CG's keep several pull thru's open for travelers. In peak season and/or in popular vacation towns, pulling in before Friday will usually net you a site.

It is just like investing. What is your tolerance for risk exposure? My wife has this thing about always needing to know where we are going, when we are getting there, and how long we are staying. Even with that being said she usually starts scanning the books and the computer programs around noon or so to lock us in a place for the night. If it is a destination and we are going to be staying a week or longer then she will do her homework and try to find us a nice place at a price we want to pay. We are quite comfortable boondocking so even if we get stuck it is not going to be a disaster.
