Is there an alternative to an air mattress besides sleeping bags? We're taking my elderly friend's mother and she can't sleep on the ground but air mattresses always seem to go flat, any ideas??

Folding camp cot, IMHO. They have nothing to go flat, and will keep her off the ground, and even at a height she'll find much easier to get into and out of. There are some excellent ones available from any camping supply store, Cabelas, Dicks Sporting Goods, etc.

Since it sounds like you'll be close to vehicles, how about a folding camp cot with the sleeping bag? Add a foam pad on the cot and a small piece of carpet on the tent floor for to stand on. The good thing about the cot is it gets your friend's mother up off the ground.

Only thing I know is like omatty said a thick piece of foam and I need at least six inches any more to even begin to feel comfy. Although I think if you buy top of the line air matresses I dont think they'll give out that fast.

We got tired of air mattress failure. Upon examination I saw seam failure in most so when I bought the next air mattress I made sure to buy the exact same brand and size. I then cut open the old mattress and inserted the new one. Thus achieving double strength. Problem solved, no more leaks.

How about a cot with a 3" foam mattress topper?
I have two Coleman single size air matresses that have not leaked in the night; great for overnite guests.
My M-I-L can't use them, though, as when she tried to once....BAM!!
She wanted me to buy one of these, but I couldn't afford it.

Thermarest mattresses are great, insulate you from the cold ground, and can actually be put back into original packaging to transport. Not cheap though.

costco sells a folding mattress that is about 3" thick.
It folds in thirds.
When folded into thirds it is about 9 inches high.
When folded it is about 28" wide X about 24" long.
It is perfect for sitting on inside the tent when folded.
Unfolded it is about 28" wide X 72" long.
It has a Vinyl cover that I can wipe with a damp rag if necessary.
The new version comes in a carrying bag and one of the sections will fold a small section to form a pillow.
I have three of them.
No pumping of air mattress.
These work really well under the Snug Top fibreglass canopy of my pickup truck. I boat camp and some short weekend trips I just use these foldable sections inside my canopy instead of setting up a tent.
Maximum water time, you know !
