I purchased a wireless printer (HP6510) but my laptop doesn't see it. I now know that I need a wifi network in my home, which I don't have.
I thought wifi printers sent out a wifi signal that you could connect to from your wifi card in laptop. I guess they changed how that works.
So if I have an Iphone with a hotspot, do I need to purchase a router to plug it into to make a wifi network? Or will the phone's hotspot work as a wifi network so my laptop, iphone, ipad and printer all communicate?
Please I cannot afford an extra $60 for mifi or aircard. I have 2 iphones with internet access ($60), I don't want to incur anymore monthly cost.
Thanks

You plug a wireless router into your laptop and that gives you a WIFI network. Unless the laptop has an internet connection you will not end up with internet connectivity. However if your phone has a hotspot you may be able to connect thru that. You'll need to have the hotspot turned on and carriers usually charge extra for that.

Is there a router available that will make my iphone hotspot a wifi network? I saw on the 3g store that it was possible, but they didn't give me any indication which router would do this. Anyone have a router that is working with the iphone? I will pay the additional $20 for this feature.

An iPhone or Mifi device wifi hotspot is a router. The question is whether the printer is capable of connecting via an iPhone hotspot and be one of the five devices connected. Also, if it can then it has to be Apple AirPrint capable in order for an iOS device like an iPhone or iPad to print on it. The HPC6510 is listed as AirPrint capable.

This is a question I would ask of Apple or HP before setting up an iPhone as a hotspot and paying extra money to do unless you plan to do it regardless.

I use a MiFi card to also link my printer to the computer and to my smartphone.

A wifi printer needs to find a network that is shared with your laptop. The simple solution is to buy a cheap ($30 or less) wifi router that will set up a network with your laptop. You install the printer drivers into the laptop and set in with the driver installation that the printer is a network printer. Then your laptop will find the printer. If you have cable or some type of broadband connection in your house, put the cable modem into the router and you will have internet service on the laptop as well.
Hotspots do not set up networks. Generally, they share an internet connection among computers or internet receiving devices which is NOT a network. It may be possible for the printer to get through the hotspot to your laptop, but I doubt it - but I don't have a hotspot to try it.

Your HP printer can be connected to your laptop using a USB cable. It can later be converted to either WIRELESS network, or WIRED (Eithernet) network, when you finally get a wireless network running. Check the manual that came with it.

I have an HP 4580 and I'm fairly certain that it came with a wireless setup wizard on the CD. I do NOT have a wireless router and I do NOT fire up my air card whenever I need to use the printer without a wire. If you can't find directions from HP, then you should review how to set up an ad hoc network, http://www.ehow.com/how_5167269_set-up-ad-hoc-network.html

A wireless printer will indeed connect to a computer through a MiFi hotspot. It will also print from a smart phone withe the proper app. My Epson connects through my Verizon MiFi card to both.

I think you need to go back to the instructions and read them again. My HP wireless printer connects to my HP laptop and my wife's Mac book Pro without the need to be connected through a router or any other wireless network. It works through the computers wireless networking.
