Anywhere if you have the guts. I took an afternoon nap under an interstate bridge today.

Walmart is probably the safest, drive down a dirt road and shut it down for an adventure.

We have never "boon-docked" except for college football games in a designated RV parking area which, in my book, does not count.

I have been asking my husband if we could do it this summer and he finally said yes. We are overnighting at a casino in New Mexico on our way to Colorado.

The link that pianotuna gave you is really good for actually boondocking out on public land however if you just want to find public campgrounds or do any overnighting in parking lots while traveling here are some more links-

Pick up a copy of "Don Wrights Guide to Free and Under $12.00 Camping" and you will find thousands of listings in the two volumes. They include just about all government campgrounds (COE, NPS, NFS, BLM, State, county, Municipal) where they have at least SOME sites that meet the criteria. They also include a very small number of RV parks who also offer some sites under those rules. What they do NOT include are any retail parking lots or rest areas (not considered camping).
WELL worth the money to have when traveling.
