Both of those books are permanently out of print--so how does one acquire a copy?

'Boondocking' has been (mis-)used for years in these forums for _any_ overnight stay off hookups or outside a CG, urban parking lots included. Yep, incorrect usage; look at the word's origins. But the argument for accuracy was lost long ago. People like cool-sounding terms for what they do, much more than they like accuracy. The tide rolled in, and was unstoppable; King Canute and all that.
In fall of '09, I made a three-week trip from NC to see Meteor Crater, Flagstaff, & Grand Canyon and a few sights along the way. Made it there and back with not one night spent in CG's. I overnighted in rest areas (mostly) & truck stops (a few) along I-40. I spent two nights along dirt tracks in the nat'l forest outside GCNP. No hassles, a thoroughly fun & memorable trip. Two night's real boondocking, the rest 'overnighting' or 'blacktopping'.

I'm old, and even have had cataract surgery. But I find it a lot harder to read all caps. If it goes on for more than a few lines, I don't even bother, just close the post and go on.

We have tried Walmart, flying J, highway rest area ( for a short nap), and Cracker barrel. Only one we really felt comfortable in were CB and flying J. Flying J was noisy but we felt safe. Cracker barrel was good. The Walmart had what appeared to be ladies of negotiable affection visiting the semi's parked there. The rest area had what appeared to be constant drug deals going on. I have heard other posts that discouraged staying in the rest area because of safety concerns.

I agree. Boondocking for us is camping out in the boonies! We have thousands of acres around here that are managed - not owned, by the Forest Service and BLM. I will stop by their office, pick up a map, rules of use, and a campfire permit.
