I am getting ready to sign up for Medicare next month for the first time. My wife will be retiring in Sept. and we plan to do some traveling in our MH. I was wondering what you folks that are out there doing it use for a Medicare Supplement and Plan D coverage.
Have you had problems with coverage when outside your home state?
Any pros or cons with your plans? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

Social Security and Medicare are two different programs and two different things. Advantage plans cover some of your Medicare things and none of your Social Security business. I do agree that Congress has made things complicated to a point where people can't make an informed decision. But then they are trying to give the public different choices.

They have made social security WAY too complicated. There are so many options it would be nearly impossible to discuss all of them but...
You do need to select a nationwide carrier for a supplemental plan (I use Blue Cross Plan C which is a supplemental. My plan D carrier is Silverscript which I chose because it has no donut hole in drug coverage. Probably the EASIEST solution would be to choose a medicare advantage plan where a third party company handles all of your SS for you. they are required to cover at LEAST the minimum coverage supplied by medicare and often they provide extra services. Many include the part D coverage as well as B & C coverage all under one company. I would suggest you stop by your local Social Security office and pick up their guide books which do a pretty good job of assisting you in making your choices based on your particular needs. With the correct choices you may have 100% of your medical bills paid or you may have to pay a percentage (with a lower premium) and there are LOTS of different levels of coverage on part D. Just look at the attributes of each and compare their charges and choose what you want them to do.

I personally selected Humana to cover the extra 20% not covered by Medicare. With their plan it cost me $ 0.00 dollars over and above the Medicare that is taken out of my SS check. I can not comment on how good it is because I have never had to use either. I only got it in case I was not able to use my VA benefits for some reason. I get all my prescriptions via VA mailed to me and VA takes care of my periodic check ups, blood tests, xrays, etc.

Man, I'm so glad we have tri-Care for Life along with Medi-Care. We just go to the doctor when needed and no cost out of pocket. Our drug plan is $5.00 generic for 30 days or $12.00 for the "real deal". Been a blessing.

A freind recommended Mutual of Omaha as a supplement. her husband had a knee replacement and she said they did not pay one penny out of pocket. We have Humana with I think a $15.00 co pay at the Dr. Prescriptions are $7. They are associated with Right Source which will send your meds via mail in a 3 month supply. DH gets his blood presssure and cholestrol meds that way. I don't know how the cost compares to the Walgreen which is what we use.

After you signup for part A, Get part B and a medicare advantage plan that will cover everything you need. Use the following link to find one, if you have questions call the numbers provided. Medicare Advantage Plan. If you still have questions about Medicare call the Social Security Admin or go to the local office in your area and ask questions.

You do not have to sign up for Mediscare, you get it whether you want it or not.

We use United Health Care for both supplemental and Plan D. We get it through AARP.
We have never had a supplemental claim in our home state but have had claims in NH, CO, and AZ with no problems. We have picked our prescriptions up at Walmarts all over the country with no problems.
