My brother is looking to get into camping. he as a budget up to $20.000 if you had to do it over again what would you buy? and stay away from. when looking what should it have cant do without? thank for all your help.

Very broad question. How many people will be camping? What type of tow vehicle and what are the weight limits?

That’s sort of asking how high is up, the sky’s the limit on answers you’ll get. Probably one of the most important questions he has to resolve is what sort of “camping” does he want to do. A 1 ton dually and a 30’ FW will be a huge disappointment if he wants to camp in pristine areas in national forests. Likewise, my 16’ will be equally disappointing if he wants to camp in RV parks and have all the amenities of a hotel room.
Big rigs of any kind suffer from difficulty in maneuvering and can have serious restrictions on where they can go and fit. Small ones can go most anywhere, but have severe restrictions on how many people can comfortably stay in them and can feel cramped if one wants to spend a lot of time in them. Plus they lack the amenities of the big rigs.
In my view anyway, MH’s of any class are good RV’s for traveling, but not so good for camping. A TC, PU and small TT’s are good for getting well off the beaten path. Big rigs require big TV’s, a ½ ton will handle the smaller rigs well except a ¾ ton is best for a TC.
The suggestion to go used is a good one for a first timer, they very well may find they want something else after using it awhile and they can avoid some of the depreciation hit of a new unit. If you can come back with some thoughts on what he wants to do with the RV I think you’ll get more specific input on your question.

For the money I'd happily take a quality used trailer as opposed to a new one that was cheaply made. If you have no experience with RVs the main thing I'd emphasize is that they aren't like houses. Most (all?) manufacturers actually specify that any warranties are voided if the trailer is lived in fulltime. That right there should give you an idea of the quality level.
I'm not trying to sour you on RVs... just trying to paint an honest picture.

If I hadto do it again I would buy my current TT first. Would of saved some money on the earlier "too small" TT's.
In his case I would look at used.

I think it greatly depends on the way he intends to camp. If he will be a destination camper on mostly shorter trips with extended stays at each location then a towable RV is the way to go. If he will be travelling a lot and stopping somewhere new each day then a MH would make more sense. Which ever he chooses please help him obtain all the equipment and teach him all the protocols to help him do it safely.

we did some renting.....tried a Class A, then Class C, TT.....if I had endless money I'd have one of each for the type of camping or travel we do, but don't so after trying each type out, we bought a 5th wheel. Still happy with our decision 6 years later.
