I am sure someone here can help me figure out this problem. We are getting ready for a trip to Alaska & as I began to check everything out I found that the furnace, when igniting, has an "explosive" sound. The best way I know to explain it is that it sounds like the propane runs too long prior to the ignitor doing it's thing & then when it all comes together it makes a loud poof sound or like gasoline when thrown on an already burning fire. If anyone has any ideas as to what this might be or how to fix it I sure would appreciate the help. I plan to take the orfice out tomorrow & see if I can see anything wrong there but just thought I'd start picking you guys brains for help. Thanks, Mac

Frist,If the furnace has a spark igniter what lites the pilot first, then the main burner you may need to adjust the spark/pilot closer to the main burner. I have found this problem on many residential units, over the years the metal holding this assembly can warp and move out further from the main burner causing that effect. Check it and correct it before too much propane pools up then ignite causing more than a small pop.
Second, if it's direct spark ignition there could be too large of a gap and it's not jumping the gap till some gas gathers, same effect and small pop noise. Both conditions are undesirable and very dangerous.

When mine did the same thing you are describing I found upon dismantling it a large mud nest in the air intake tube!!
Please let us know the outcome.

Sounds normal to me. I turn on my furnace and after a short wait, it also makes a popping/roaring sound and I'm still here alomg with my DW and cat and TT.

Mac is still out working on the furnace but asked me go ahead & post that he did find all parts of the furnace FULL of dauber mud. Of course it was all caked & hard as a rock so he had to use several different methods of removal but he did get them all out & no explosive sounds now. Thanks for the help everyone. He has another question regardling the orfice but I will put it in a different post for max exposure. Thanks again!!

You need to look closely inside the combustion chamber area for mud-daubers. The explosive sound is not correct. Many times, I find mud-daubers way inside and have to remove the entire furnace to wash out the nests. Sometimes they get very hard and cannot be removed with compressed air. I use a powerful light and mirror to get a good look inside the furnace.

It could be a number of things- bad board, bad electrode, bad burner, need cleaning.

Thanks for the postings so far & as soon as I can figure it out I will let everyone know what I found. I am not at all comfortable with leaving as is, just doesn't sound like it should at all & I too feel it could be dangerous. Mac
