I'd go with the tried and true Ford 7.3, some of the earlier Dmaxes had some rather expensive injector issues.
Up to 2004.5 with the LB7 engine that is true.
Note the recommendations were for the 2006 to 2007.5 model years with the LBZ engine.
BUT my neighbor has a 2004 and he told me he has a letter from GM warrantying his injectors indefinitely. He has had one replacement set.

The Duramax Allison combo is great.

Check the tail pipe when the truck is idling there should be NO noticeable smoke.
Smoking at idle is an indication of very expensive injector problems with a Duramax.

Guess how I know that!!!
Was yours not covered under the injector warranty?

Don't get all carried away with the transmission and engine only.

GM has made major changes to the chassis also, frame changes etc.

They have the superior overall truck at the moment with their new models, good GVWR for truck campers now.

In December I purchased a 2001 GMC 3500 DRW extended cab 4x4 with 134,000 miles on it. She runs like a bear and is quite comfortable to ride in. It laughs at the 2500-2600 lb. dry weight of my Avion camper. The transmission is very smooth and I hear the 6 speed auto trans are even nicer. I couldn't pass on the truck because I thought it was a great price. Good luck in your search.

No! The Extended GM injector warranty is for 200,000 miles or 7 years mine had only 155,000 miles but is 9 years old.

Repair cost was just under $4,700.

I echo the 2006 to 2007.5 truck with the LBZ engine as being the best out there unless you are considering new.

No, I would not consider new.

Follow up question....
What are the trim levels of the GMC/Chevy truck. I am partial to the XLT of the F150 and the Ranger but I am not familure with GM. I am just wondering what the low, mid, and top grades are refered as.

btw, thanks for the info on the duramax.
