We have narrowed the choices down to the Monaco DFT the question is what beneficial is the tag axle? The non tag is a 40' so we loose 1 sink in the rear bathroom over the 43' (well its over 44'). We are coming out of a 5th wheel and just want to make the right decision. with the ride quality being very important. The cost difference is only $ 20,000 so that is not an issue.

Which will have a better hwy ride?

Thanks

We have a tag axle on our 36' and it allows for more weight and a more stable ride.

We have a gas unit though.

The Monaco tag axle coach with 10 air bags and 10 shocks is extremely stable over the road. The tag also gives you a good bit more NCC/CCC capacity and the ability to transfer some weight from the drive axle to the steer and tag axles to fine tune the balance.

I usually ask, what kind of car do you drive? If it's a Town Car then a non tag might do BUT if you drive a car that loves curvy roads, then you want a tag. Also, 40' non tag axle DPs have very little CCC while tag's will have 7000+.
Once you've owned a DP with a tag axle you will NEVER go back to a non tag. The 10 airbag Monaco's give rock solid handling and 13 hour days are a pleasure. Spend the extra $20K and do it right the first time... NOT like me that started with a 36' DP and then a 40' and now a 42'. Do not worry about finding USFS, BLM, SP, NP, or COE sites big enough, just dont try on Friday afternoon. BUY MORE DP THAN YOU THINK YOU NEED... ONE TIME, not like me.

This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

Another small benefit with the tag is that you have an extra set of tires to rotate to the front. We did exactly that. Our tag tires looked barely used as the front were showing a little wear. So, I had the tag tires rotated to the front to have a 'fresher' steering tire.

I think the tag axle gives a better ride. It eliminates porpoising and makes the coach drive straighter and no issues with trucks passing or heavy winds.

Tag axles give the better ride. Both the tag and the extra weight contirbute to the ride. The tag does consume outside storage space but then the rig is usually longer with more inside and outside space.

By extra weight I mean as the rig exceeds 20K lbs/axle extra tires are required.

More tires, brakes and $ for purchase and maintenance.

I agree with two of the posters above....there are no cons and once you have one you'll never go back. If you haven't driven either coach, I would suggest you do so before you purchase. Do it on a very windy day and you'll see what we are talking about...the ride is what its about...how many TOUR busses do you see without a tag..>?????....Dennis
