We plan a coast-to-coast trip in July, from WA to NY. Our time is not unlimited, as we plan to attend a wedding in NY. It would be nice to make camping reservations, but it's going to be fairly difficult to know exactly where we will be at any given time. We're willing to use Walmarts and rest areas, but at times we will want hookups, a dump station, and relative quiet. Any advice or experience will be greatly appreciated.

We wait until after lunch to decide how much longer we want to drive. Then I look up CGs in that area and call for a site. Unless you are traveling on a holiday, this works well. On a holiday, you need to call ahead as far as you can - although last minute cancellations sometimes come up, don't plan on that!

Depends on where you want to stay - most commercial RV resorts you dont need reservations, for just one night. COE or state parks, or locations near tourist attractions, I strongly suggest reservations especially for weekends or holidays and if you want to stay a day or two. Also depends on the part of the country you are in, some parks can be full of workers living in their RVs such as pipe liners or construction work.

We took a 7 month trip around the country and the only reservations we had were for the Labor Day weekend and the Grand Canyon. I would get confirmed reservations for the wedding, pick up a copy of the trailer Life Campground guide and wing it.

Ditto. We also carry the Trailer Life/ Rand McNally atlas that shows the location of all the cgs/Rv park on the map so we figure out where we should get to that late afternoon. Then call ahead to ensure a space.

We make reservations at our destination, enroute we just wing it.
Free Campgrounds, Free Campsites and Casino Camper are some of the sites we use for overnight stops if no CG is available.
Enjoy your trip.

As a full-timer, I still work and engage in extensive travel north and south, east of the Mississippi. Although, I usually remain in an area for 1 to 2 weeks at a time. As a rule during camping season (Memorial Day thru Labor Day) Federal/State/City&County campgrounds serve me well, particularly between Sunday and Thursday. If the CGs have a few non-reservable sites held back, all the better through the weekend. Sometimes I have had to relocate to another site within the park to accommodate an incoming reservation. I don't mind. Other times, I've had to spend a Friday and Saturday night in a private park; and I've dry-camped for a night or two waiting for a government campground site. I've found that by being self contained and staying flexible, reservations aren't necessary.

Naturally, I use a laptop and an air card for accessing the Internet. U.S. Campgrounds and Passport America are my two main directories. Bear in mind that PA affiliated parks do have restrictions in which case any private park will suffice when enroute. Enjoy your trip and drive safely.

We have never made reservations when traveling across country. We get out Trailer Life in the early afternoon and call ahead to get a site the distance ahead we want to drive. Never had to make a second call.

We did make one advance reservation (several months ahead) so we could attend a wedding on Long island, NY. A Friday and Saturday night the third weekend of June and we had to be there. The campground was absolutely full that weekend.

Thank you all very much. Your responses are very valuable, and we do appreciate them. I'm getting an idea of how to do this now.

I think that you have been given very good suggestions, on how to approach this. The biggest thing is fear...right? And you don't 'need' a spot..you aren't tenting, so...sit back and enjoy the ride. Too..when you see a place you just have to stay at...you can, not committed to something else down the road.

An aside...I have only ever seen one of those place...HAVE TO BE HERE...and that's in Brookings, Oregon, at the city owned RV campsite...oh man...that was and is...the best, ever.
