We are moving from Ohio to Florida, and this will be our first big move. Anyone out there have any suggestions for moving our belongings? PODS, UPAK, any suggestions? We will drive down with our RV but I'm sure it will take a month to find a home to buy....

I can't give you and advice on what method to use. Definitely get rid of stuff you don't really need or use often. I've moved several times and got of a lot of stuff AFTER I moved it.
I guess I'm a slow learner.

From Ashtabula to Florida... Wow! If you prefer the small town laid back atmosphere of Ashtabula, I'd live north of Orlando. The closest thing in comparison would be along the "forgotten coast" from St. Marks to Mexico Bch. The difference is seafood from the Gulf instead of Lake Erie. In the old days, I'd load up the biggest U-haul they had and drive away. Today, I just haul the house with me. Good luck and welcome to the Sunshine State.

Let's see..... that's 19 million plus now... or 16 1/2 million more than when I started.

Depending on how your health is I would suggest simply hiring a moving company. Without professionals moving takes a LOT of strong young men and a lot of beer. With professionals all it takes is a butt load of money.

I've always been fortunate enough to have a moving company do the work, typically paid by the company - but once paid for the packing/storage by myself. If you decide to do it yourself, maybe with the help of family and friends, I'd still suggest professional moving boxes, LOTS of packing material, don't overload boxes, and use padding and/or shrink wrap for furniture. Otherwise you will have alot of broken, soiled and damaged stuff.

Can you leave everything in a storage facility in Ashtabula? Drive the RV down, take your time to buy a house then go back for the stuff?

By the time you find a home and go through closing it could take a couple months.

We have done this a couple times. One time we left stuff in Vegas a year and used the RV never worried about all the "stuff". Went back to get it.

I've gotten quotes from PODS, from 1-800-PACKRAT and UPAK...Pods is way more expensive, but I think it is the way to go. Since we will be buying cash, it shouldn't take that long to close on a new home-I would hope!

Take a hard look at what you will move vs price per pound to move it vs buying new or used when you have a home to put it in. It is easy to burden yourself with stuff. Enjoy a smooth move

Just use PODS and send for the stuff when you are ready. Better than storage as it is loaded once versus twice when you store with movers. Also cheapest way if you are paying.
