We have a two year old black lab mix. Always fun to ask folks what the mix part is. We have no idea. She is super loyal and absolutely loves to hike with us. Last weekend we hiked about 9 miles. We got back to camp and that night while taking off her harness I noticed the hair had worn off where the harness made contact with her skin under the front where leg joins main body. She was off leash most of the day. The harness is to avoid pullin on her neck when we are around other hikers. My question is what can be done to stop this? Wrap friction points with something or is there a balm I can put on her or ? I really do not want to do this again and feel terrible. She never complained and this has never happened though this was a longer hike than ever before. Any thoughts?

Get your self some genuine sheep skin with the fur still attached. Not the fake stuff. Cut it in strips and wrap them around the harness where it rubs.

Have you ever heard of Gentle Leader?
If you are just using the harness because your dog is pulling alot, you should really investigate this collar.
We have a now 4 year old Chocolate Lab weighing appox 85lbs. Buddy used pull like a freight train. I had a little old lady (literally) tell me about the Gentle Leader in Pet Smart one day and how her large dog immediately stopped 'pulling' the first time she tried it. So, I bought it and...same thing!! Buddy immediately stopped pulling and just walked nicely on the leash.
The Gentle Leader slips on easily and when used, transfers the pulling energy to the dogs muzzle, which they don't like. So, they stop pulling pretty much immediately.
We now have four of them. I keep one attached to each leash we own. I keep one in each vehicle, one in the motorhome, and one at our back door.
Can't recommend it enough!!!

I just researched the Gentle Leader. Interesting. It is not that she pulls so much as she barks at other hikers on the trail and I need to restrain her from other dogs at times. I am thinkin the sheep shin idea may work though not sure where to buy it?

I have used the genuine sheepskin for my dogs in the past and it worked really well. Feel free to ask on our pet RVing facebook group too.

You can also look for a working harness that already has the sheepskin on it - try Working Dog Equipment. These harness are designed to be comfortable for dogs that are working, much like when you are hiking. So the "chaff" points will be non-existent or in a "hairier" area... Pet store harnesses often don't fit as comfortably.

Tack stores (horse equipment) sell fleece tubes to go over halters - here's an examplefleece
Just keep in mind that this stuff will pick up every burr/thorn/pricker your dog runs through....LOL!! The NICE part is that is all washable.

I have a black lab/newfie mix that is shedding right now. If you decide not to go with the sheep skin, I can send you enough hair to build another dog.
