My bank, RBC, also charges a similar rate now on all my debit card transactions, so I would imagine the other banks do too!
Just because you do not see a 'Fee' on your statement does not mean that they don't charge one!
As others have said , it is only polite to use the currency of the country you are visiting. Can you imagine a load of tourists coming ashore from a cruise ship in a US port and trying to use their Euros in the local stores!

For me, it was just about every pump. Use the numbers in your postal code followed by zeros.. Example: Q2L 3F4 would be: 23400.. It works.

As some have said, we get about $100 cash, then use Visa or Mastercard, no problem. Wouldn't want to use a credit card just to buy a donut or newspaper.

Whoops!! You are correct....they add a 2.5% premium. I had never noticed that before.
Re your cruise ship comment. Actually I've seen that happen quite often in Mexico. I once watched a woman from a cruise ship in Puerto Vallarta Mexico insisting on paying for a 30 peso item (under $3) with a $50 US bill and demanding that she get her change in US dollars.

Some one correct me if I am wrong;
If Canadians traveling in the USA have a Flying J/Pilot RV card then I believe that they can fill up at Flying J and Pilot without needing a zip code (because the card identifies them) and the limit on the credit card for fill up in increased.....I think it is $150 per fuel transaction.
I asked a Loves Truckstop cashier if they had a similar program for RVers but they did not, at least at that time.

Capitol One credit cards do not charge the international transaction fees. There are a few others.
We got one specifically to avoid the fees. I'm already using it to book campgrounds in Atlantic Canada for summer trip coming.

It's not just you John! More often than not, when we put our credit card in for gas when travelling out of state, we are asked for our zip code.

Same for me. And I think I've tried every trick in the book to get around not having a US Zip code to enter and never found any that worked.
