Does direct TV or Dish TV come out and set up your rig? Who owns the equipment? Dish,DVR's etc. I see some DVR equipment for sale different places. Is that permissible and does it reduce the cost of the service? My cable company at home provides all the equipment and replaces it if it is bad for free.
Thanks

I have Dish. When I had a house they installed the equipment there. I told them I was changing from cable to Dish so I could take it with me in the RV. He gave me a portable Dish and Tripod and showed me how to set it up. The receiver is theirs and I get charged a monthly rental fee. If it fails they replace it. I could buy my own receiver and register it if I wanted and save the rental fee but I chose not to do it this way. The installer said he would have installed it in the RV if I had wanted. It's easy to install and set up. For the first couple of years I would just transfer the receiver from house to RV whenever we took off for a while.

Some of my Direct TV equipment is mine and some of it is theirs. To my knowledge, I never actually "paid" for any equipment.

We have Dish and are planning to full time in June. When I spoke to Dish, they gave me a price of $400 for the equipment. Do I understand correctly that the dish and tripod can be obtained with no cost?

Dump the cable co and select one of the satellite companies. They will come out and install for free. Buy an antenna and tripod off eBay to setup your RV. Take a receiver from home and you are ready to go. One service, one bill, no hassles.

Since when does Dish replace the receivers if they fail for free? We pay $7.00/mo. for a maintenance cost.

If going with Dish, I would look at the tailgater. Just drop it on the ground, hook up the cable and watch tv.

I just recently purchased a receiver 211K from Camping World online for $149. Then I purchased a Tailgater Satellite portable unit on Ebay new for $350. All it took to hookup was a call to Dish Network. I gave them the info from receiver and picked service I wanted then ran coax that came with Tailgater(50') from receiver to Tailgater(set on ground with clear southern sky view, plugged receiver in and it was a simple 15 minute setup and I was done. Only issue is you can only have 1 tv hooked up to it...and if you want to record shows have to hook up external hd to receiver. Best and simplest choice I have made yet! $500 and its done......also has a place on satellite to place a chain and lock to it for a little piece of mind(not very much)

From what I understand (and my son was a Dish installer up until last month), all the equipment whether you pay for it or not is now the property of Dish or DirecTV. This is a recent change over the last few years.
We paid a reduced cost for 2 HD DVR's last year and monthly fees and another $5.99 for insurance through DirecTV. It's worth it, because we've had them go bad. That's why we upgraded to HD since the SD DVR's kept going out and they would send another refurbished unit that would go out again.
