I suspect for most people there are multiple reasons: e.g. peace and quiet, privacy and solitude, greener, being closer to nature, and costs less (that never hurts).
IMO, some of these are even roughly equivalent (e.g. peace and quiet, privacy and solitude, and being closer to nature all go together, IMO.)
It'd be a better survey if you allowed multiple selections.

I'm not anti-social but I really don't want to live 3 feet away from my neighbor. We've driven thru parks where the units have to be staggered slightly so that the slide out on one rig doesn't interfere with the awning on the next one. You can hear your neighbors conversations so you know what they are having for dinner, what tv show they are watching etc. No thanks. We stay at parks sometimes but we boondock probably 70% of the time, primarily for 2 reasons. A little privacy (peace and quiet) but a distant 2nd reason is the cost. For a modest investment we can be set up so we have all the conveniences we need.

Great point. I considered allowing multiple choices in this poll but elected to go with a single reason this time around. My next poll will allow multiple choices.

We spent the month of January in a snowbird park. First and last time. I couldn't wait to get out of there. I felt like I was in a refugee camp, even though it is a park enclosed with a wall and security gates, the place was lit up all night. Fearful people scare me!
Obviously, I'm not into organized activities and prefer places without cables, hoses and badmitten nets. I prefer solitude and the peace and quiet. It is very hard being close to nature in an rv park with lots of noise. Get away from all that and nature comes to life right before your eyes.
Over Spring break weekend we had family out. The great neices and nephews were sitting in the living room after breakfast, all of a sudden they jumped up and ran for the windows facing the backyard. I thought someone had fallen in the pool only to find out they had seen a squirrel and were all excited. Sad commentary.

Update: By a healthy margin, Solitude and Privacy has taken over the number one spot (33%) as the reason RV'ers prefer boondocking over campgrounds/resorts/RV Parks.

Having a free wonderful spot all to yourself or paying to have close neighbors in a campground.
That seems a no brainer.
But maybe I'm just cheap.

In a campground WE are the noisy neighbors due to our dogs that will bark at anything that gets near so we boondock so they have nothing to bark at. The side benefit are all of the other things listed in the survey.
With gas prices the way they are and the closest boondocking being 2 hours away, it would be cheaper to spend a weekend at the local close campground than filling the tank to get out to the boonies. After 3 or 4 nights the free part kicks in.

The solitude you can find is a big part for me but also many of my outdoor activities are better suited and found in the more remote areas. Not paying a fee and not having to leave at a set time is nice too
