not good on the pc so forgove me. i have a 01 beaver patriot 37ft with a 330 cat. i dont have to have but want a newer class a and thinking a30-35ft diesel or gas. mine gets 6.7 with or without trailer. do newer diesels get better mileage and those of you that have gas motors what do you think about them and maintenance problems and gas mileage with toad or trailer. ime open to all comments. have a lot of deciding on my mind thanks mike

mdanielson55, I would think a gas unit would get about the same mpg as you are getting now. When I have spoken to people in campgrounds that have CAT engines, it seems they get less mpg than Cummins engines. That's just my unscientific research.

Our Cummins ISL 425hp engine has averaged 8.2 mpg over 50,000 miles and we weigh just over 40,000 lbs. and the mpg includes always pulling our toad. My 'pencil to paper' calculations usually snow us around 7.0-7.5 mpg. But we have gotten 4.5-9.5 over those calculations so I guess my Aladdin computer system is pretty accurate.

Also, I drive between 55-60 mph 99% of the time.

MM.

Your MPG seems a bit low. Our 330 Cat ranges between 7.5 and 10 MPG with our average at 8.6. We tow a 4,500# Jeep and cruise at 55-60 once we have gotten it into 6th over. How many miles on the engine and did you do the valve lash adjustment at 25-30K mi?

You mileage seems a little low but you're going to spend $75K+ to maybe get 7.5 mpg??? MM gets 8.2 while over 50K I'm getting 7.0 but I drive a little faster and weigh more than he does. I'd spend a little money checking on your engine, keep what you have, and not worry about the MPG. Stop looking at newer units, especially gas ones.
PS, I had a 40' 98 Patriot that was very trouble free and got 7.5.

This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

My new Cummins 360 gets about 10 on normal ground pulling a small Honda Fit. This is based on the first 3000 miles. This assumes that the built in computer is calculating mileage correctly

The money you will spend for a newer unit will not be offset by the small increase (if any) in MPG, assuming that is all you are after.

Can you tell us your weight and weight of the trailer? I have the 330 Cat in a 38 ft MH weighing about 26000 pounds going down the highway, towing a 4400 pound toad. At 64 mph I consistently get 8.3. Unless your rig is a lot heavier, I too think there is something wrong with your engine to be getting such low mileage.
