Never dreamed when he drove his brand new TDI Jetta off the dealer parking lot in 2000, that he'd get 300,000 miles on it......he was so happy yesterday when his car hit that landmark. Would like a new Jetta but since this 00 still gets more than 50mpg it's kind of hard to let go....his next goal 400,000.....

Wonder what the cost of changing the timing belt, along with the price of a new belt would be for the VW TDI ?
We have a Pontiac Vibe, which as many know is really a Toyota Matrix...kind of like a Corolla wagon.
We have to change the timing belt, of it's gas 4 cylinder Toyota engine, at around 100,000 kms...not there yet, but I have heard around $ 800 or so.
Ouch.
I also would be very interested to know what any additional repair or maintenance costs for the OP's VW Jetta diesel would be.
Drove a 2011 VW Jetta TDI and I was very impressed with the generous low end torque it develops. Really moves out.

A friend of mine bought a '86 Jetta TDI and proceeded to put over 325,000 miles on it before he got rid of it. It also got excellent mileage, but it wasn't a trouble free existence: he had to do some work on the head when it developed some small cracks. Luckily he is a good mechanic and could do the work himself.
All in all it was a good car. Quite a few trips to Colorado skiing in that thing.

If I remember correctly it was about $800 for the timing belt work.
Oil changes are every 10K and they are running me <$70.
I needed a new belt tensioner.
Don't recall any other non-scheduled service costs.

He just changed his timing belt for the 3rd time. He is the one that always changes his oil (synthetic) He can't stand for anyone else to touch his "baby". Has gone thru 3 sets of Michelin tires, has them rotated regularly. He drives it to work 5 days a week and also just to rip around town. Only once did it break on him we made a trip up to Ohio in 09 to visit our daughter, we were almost to TN coming back to SC and it just quit. Some tiny hose got a little cut on it. Don't remember the exact name but it about killed him to see the Jetta loaded on a flatbed cause he had checked it over before we left home. We have an 06 TDI that is mine, just turned 112,000 she is our Ohio trip car now. It only gets 44mph instead of the 50+ his does.

We have a two year old TDI and it is a good vehicle BUT it has had some problems. Right after we got it, it refused to turn over now and then, left us stranded twice. VW could find nothing wrong. After the fourth time in the shop the put a new battery in and has been fine since. Recently the windshield wipers would not work. Dealer kept it three days till they found the problem, replaced a board. When I asked what it would have cost if not covered they said $500. As soon as I got home I started calling VW to let them know how unhappy I would be to have to pay that on a car that should have about 14,000 miles when the warrenty runs out this summer. The sent me a $500 voucher to apply to a extended warrenty or future repairs.

I had a 2002 VW Jetti TDI and I can tell you how much it cost if you DON"T change the belt. Lets just say its far far far cheaper to change it. I am about to buy another either Jetta or Passat and have been told by the salesman, which I never believe, but he said they use a chain now. I'm trying to find out for sure.
