I would think the DIC would catch a low fluid pressure, or hight temp condition and light up an idiot light?
I have to wonder how many of these "repair kits" these guys are selling...
Anyone have real life experience with an actual failure?

I have a 2002 and had to have the rear case replaced in December last year, with 110,000 miles on the clock. GM will not do anything to help the customer on this problem.
There is quite a bit of information on this problem over on Dieselplace.com.
I also had to replace one front wheel hub and ABS sensor and then later the other ABS sensor.
The next thing that I have to replace is all the brake lines and the fuel lines. They are rusted to the max and I can not remove the fuel filter at this time. I am waiting for my mechanic to get a couple of heavy jobs out the door and then he will have me bring it in.

Pump rub is hit and miss on these cases. There was also a study released a while back about changing out the fluid in the transfer case from transmission fluid to 30 weight synthetic motor oil. It is supposed hold up better to the heat produced in the case. You can also add a third quart of oil through the speed sensor plug at the top of the case. I did this a few years ago and last year I changed the fluid and it looked great with no burnt fluid smell whatsoever. Look it up at The Diesel Place.

Here is a good You Tube video. Pump Rub Granted this one had 200,000 but the so called clip fix was still in place. But the transfer case still was worn badly. When I did my truck at 40,000 my clip was still in place with significant wear behind the clip.
Those that want to ignore this problem! it is your truck the fix is easy and cheap. Just do not cry when you are 100's of miles from nowhere when the transfer case locks up on you. By the way overfilling does nothing to stop the wear. There is no pressure monitored as this is in the transfer case not the transmission.

I really, really hate to use the word 'lawyer', but maybe enough of us could get together to organize a class action suit to force GM to take action on this obvious design flaw. This is obviously not 'normal wear and tear' any more than the steering column clunk is. The internet gives us organizing power that was unheard of even a decade ago.
That, or force a recall thru NTSB, if some have locked up at highway speed. Anybody know of any such cases?
I've only got 55,000 mi on my '06, but really hate the idea of having that large a bill & that much work for no noticeable improvement, just because some cost accountant made engineering decisions.
Thoughts?

I had this issue at about 60,000 miles on my 04 3500 Silverado, driving home to Michigan from Wyoming. In Nebraska I noticed an oil film on the back of my camper, I assumed it was from the heavy construction I have been driving through. When I got home further inspection showed the problem. Well $2000.00 later a new transfer case remedied the problem.

It is not likely the transfer case would ever lock up to the point to cause an accident. Most of these problems happen long after the warranty. It is a non safety issue. So we are stuck with the problem and GM will never step up to the bar and make it right. It is not a problem with 07 and later years. If you ask your local GM service manager about the problem you will understand the statement (deer in the headlights look). Most will not admit there is a problem. Correct not all are affected but there is enough if you own one best have it checked out. Cost now if you do the work yourself is about $100. If you wait until it is a problem as a previous poster said $2000 but more important you are stranded until you get it replaced.

2001-2007 Chev Dmax issue
I don't understand how this is a Duramax issue?
Pump rub affects all 1999-2007 GM trucks... Magnesium cases are the problem, 2007.5 and up now have aluminum cases again. There is a company that remanufactures the back half of the tcase in aluminum, this should solve any pump rub/bearing "c" clip wear problems.
I installed the Merchant auto transfer case pump in my 145K GMC and the transfer case still looked like new when I put it in. I was using Castrol Transynd in my transfer case after the factory fill.

Had the work done yesterday, 4 hours labor. I had it done at the guy I usually use, Fluids changed, fuel filter, oil filter & this job came to $600,
Mine had no problem when he pulled the case apart. I have the old part, I can certainly see how it could cause a hole if the clip came out.
Worth it for peace of mind.
