I know this is nuts....But I want to tour the Orient in the comfort of my Motor-home.
I spend a fair amount of time in Asia due to work and have noticed that the RV is becoming the ultimate acquisition of some of the wealthy Chinese. And they are starting to put in some infrastructure. (RV Parks)
The available RV's over there are all US made.
I found a company that would orchestrate the shipping of your RV. Then you could tour China, Mongolia, and Siberia for a month or so, then they will arrange for your RV to be purchased by a local when you're done.
The claim that in most cases, because of the Chinese demand, that you can sell your RV for an amount that would cover the cost of the RV, and the cost of the trip+ and shipping. And in many instances, they have the RV pre-sold before you even leave the US. If not, you can ship it back home.
The Language and crazy driving over there doesn't scare me off too much....
But, has anyone done this? or Heard of anyone doing this?
Don't beleive everything they tell you, especially about selling the RV for more than what you spent. That same rumor was floating around in the 70's for full size vans in Germany. A lot of G.I.s were buying full size custom vans and taking them to Germany with them in hopes of selling them for 2-3 times what the paid for them. Were they suprized when they were offered about a third of what they paid for them.
You need to be careful. You say that they are starting to put in some infrastructure. (RV Parks), that is a start but it will be awhile before they are avalable atleast someplaces. I see a few draw backs on RVing in the Orient, the roads are not designed to accomadate an RV of any size, fuel cost are high, service departments are hard to find, dump sites are hard to find, the cost (taxes) to bring a RV into China is high, then parking it could be a problem. I think the idea of RVs in the orient is about 10 years out. I know that it will come as many of the campgrounds I go to there are Orientals camping...mostly Tent camping, but still camping. At this time this is about the only RV that works in China....

As gross as it is, the Chinese seem to not mind if you dump in the nearest ditch. Not that I'm especially comfortable with that.
I've read a bit on the taxes, and that seems to only apply if you leave it there to sell, not as much if you take it home with you. I could be wrong as it's not very clear.
I know in Thailand, where I have a home, If I import my vehicle, I get a 250% tax on the new value of the vehicle. But if I drive it in from a neighboring country, I can use it and take it out.
Driving would still be quite an adventure. While I'm very comfortable driving a regular car in China and I subscribe to the philosophy that if the city bus can do it, so can I, It's probably way out of my league. I did find a place that has drivers for hire. But what's the fun in that?
Really curiosity if anyone has attempted.

Back a long while ago someone posted a picture of a Class C about 29' that was at a gagage in HCMC Vietnam. It is the only one I have ever seen and I have been back 12 times in the last 10 years. Anyway when I was there in the 70's one officer over there had a 40' mobilehome that he had the military drag around when he got reassinged. I still don't know how he got that there. I think the right size for the Orient would be a 24' Vision or Class B.
