Hi there,
We are headed to Nevada to see some relatives. However I heard that there is something called the "Loneliest Road" there and am concerned. Has anyone ever been on this road? Has anyone ever been stuck out in the middle of nowhere in general? If so, was it a memorable experience, i.e. you made it fun anyhow, or was it scary>
Yup... it's pretty lonely on US 50 through Nevada. Excellent road but be aware that there is plenty of up and down as you cross several mountain ranges between desert valleys. We got buzzed by some high performance aircraft while on that road. He was heading west, I was heading east, we met at the top of one of those mountain passes and it scared the you know what out of me!
We broke down on the Alaska highway in our DP. Got lucky with a repair. Ran out of gas one mile west of Colorado/Utah state line on I70 when the old Jeep Wranglers has a fuel sending unit problem that showed I had a 1/2 tank of gas when in fact... I was out. To make matters worse, it was our anniversary.
I have never lived that down and that was 15 years ago... everytime the gas gauge shows 1/2 tank, I BETTER be lookin' for a gas station.

US 50, across NV is 'called' The Loneliest Road but we have traveled it both directions and would do so anytime the opportunity arises! Several towns along the way, lots of neat scenery and mountain ranges to cross ( easy pulls for all of them!).
Just watch your gas gauge and be sure to travel only on the "top 2/3s". You can enjoy this road!
Ya know, being "stuck" somewhere in/with an RV is not all that bad. Certainly a LOT more pleasant than being stuck somewhere without the RV!
I got "stuck" last year in the little town of Russell, KS when my TV blew the oil line supplying the turbocharger. When I discovered the severity of the leak, I had to add 3.5 quarts of oil to get the engine back up to the mark. I dragged the trailer about 2 miles to the nearest campground (which cost me another quart and a half of oil). That was saturday morning, and no repairs possible until monday. Parts had to be ordered, of course, and it was wednesday morning before I was able to resume my trip. Russell, KS is no big city, but not exactly middle of nowhere, either. But that was 4 days, and 4 days enforced camping wasn't all that bad.
It's a nice drive and really not that lonely - go for it! We've never been stuck. Had a couple of breakdown where we had to be towed ,one time 90 miles to the nearest repair shop. Got a flat in Alaska. RVers were running over to help before we were fully stopped.
50 is a real pretty road, unless you prefer neon lights and strip malls.
Nope, never been "stuck" with RV. Now with a tractor .....

This is an excellent road with good surface all the way across NV. The "loneliest road" is good hype to promote it as an effort to get more traffic into the few small towns. The scenery is typical western wide-open views, changing from desert to rolling hills, etc. If you can, stay at Great Basin Nat'l. Park near the Utah state line. From there, it is an easy day's drive to Reno. You will enjoy it.
When US50 goes through and over the mountains, are there shear dropoffs? Are there guard rails along the edge of the road? Is there a shoulder at all?
I ask because I never, ever want another experience like I had in Rocky Mountain National Park, on the road from Estes Park.

Regarding 50, didnt get stuck, but last year to CA we went on 50 through Tahoe, towing the toad on a dolly. And that same week, they had a mountain side come down, many times was on a one lane, no guard rails etc.. In hind-site should have taken 80 to Sacramento.. White knuckled that one. Fortunately, haven't run outta gas since High School. I was a poor student, supporting the Girl Friend, so gas was at the bottom of the list..
