Very interested in becoming workampers in a couple years-we love to camp and want to travel throughout the us when we retire in 2 years. Would like Oct-Mar/Apr. Hubby has worked at a campground for 12 years repairing campers and I work in accounting. Do you think campgrounds would be interested

Trying to find an exact workamping match for what you did in your previous life could be difficult. Your DH could probably find work at RV dealers during high season and you would pay out of pocket at the nearest RV park. I've never seen an ad looking for an accountant for a few months but I've seen a few looking for folks with QuickBooks experience. If you can do your accountant work remotely, now would be a good time to start building up clientele. You can also check this thread for other ideas.

Are you wanting paid or volunteer positions? I was forced into retirement last year so to get camping this year I am volunteering with the state park system. I already have two months booked.

They will absolutely be interested. The people who enjoy this type of work the most are those who love meeting new people and don't feel like they need to watch the clock. The days can be long and hard during the peak season (summer). But since you are thinking about Fall/Winter work you shouldn't run into that too much. Your most likely going to find work in AZ, TX or FL. The best thing to do is to choose *where* you want to go, then find out *who* is hiring in that area.

Try some of the state parks in the south part of Georgia. They need hosts all year long. Full hookups and few hours, but all volunteer

DW and I were having the same conversation the other day. The difference is that we aren't close to retirement. The youngest will graduate in a couple of years and enlist in a branch of the military. We are more interested in becoming snowbirds. We both work jobs that we are able to take the winters off and would love to workcamp for a site.
I was thinking it was too early to start looking but maybe not!

It's not too early to begin researching possible volunteer positions. We plan a year ahead. We're presently have three volunteer positions lined up through May 2013 and are investigating volunteer openings at places we would like to explore summer 2013.
A good site to see what maybe available http://www.volunteer.gov/gov/

If you are looking for paid positions, winter is not the best season to be looking. All the snowbirds congregate in the south, creating competition for workamping positions. This allows the employers to offer lower wages and reqauire more hours for sites. If you are a CPA, you could probably easily find employment during tax season just about anywhere. There are also many temp agencies that look for experienced accounting personnel, but both of those options are more job and less workamping. RV repair experience may be marketable in the big snowbird areas with the local RV dealers. They have a large influx of business and probably need part time staff. Again, this is more job than workamping. Much of the snowbird traditional workamping is hours for sites, not much paid compensation. An exception would be the gate guarding positions that are highly covered in this forum. Good income, but surely not for everyone. Good luck with whatever you chose to do.
